Genetic Counselor Assistant
About the Role
The Division of Pediatric Medical Genetics at the University of Utah Spencer F. Eccles School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a Genetic Counselor Assistant (GCA). This position is part of the patient throughput team, supporting providers in Medical Genetics with administrative functions, including triaging and prepping incoming cases for review. The role includes patient-facing responsibilities such as consenting for genetic testing and obtaining samples. Additional duties include ordering genetic tests, updating patient records, coordinating appointments, and participating in team meetings and quality improvement projects.
Responsibilities
- Reviews referrals and triages patients for appropriateness of genetic services.
- Obtains and abstracts medical records for clinical appointments.
- Assists with patient chart reviews and case preparation for genetic counselors and clinicians.
- Obtains informed consent for genetic testing.
- Coordinates genetic testing for family members, including diagnostic and research-related testing.
- Obtains patient samples (e.g., cheek swabs) for genetic testing.
- Researches insurance coverage and authorization requirements for genetic testing.
- Enters patient visit and genetic testing data into the tracking database.
- Assists in preparing letters of medical necessity under genetic counselor guidance.
- Provides updates to patients and families on insurance authorizations and testing status.
- Assists with appointment scheduling and responds to phone inquiries.
- Prepares and distributes patient follow-up correspondence regarding test results.
- Composes correspondence, newsletters, presentations, and program materials.
- Performs other assigned duties.
Qualifications
Equivalency Statement: 1 year of higher education can substitute for 1 year of directly related work experience (e.g., bachelor’s degree = 4 years of experience).
Job Levels and Requirements:
- Program Assistant I: Little to no related experience required.
- Program Assistant II: At least 1 year of related experience required.

Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Hours may vary based on operational needs. Opportunities for a hybrid telework schedule may be considered after initial training, subject to performance and operational requirements.
