General Surgery Subspecialty Physician Assistant (Full Time)

About the role

This subspecialty surgery position (ENT, Urology, GYN, Plastic Surgery, and Robotic Surgery) is located at 267 Grant St, Bridgeport, CT 06610. We are looking for a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner with significant operative responsibility, including OR first assisting experience. Additional training in robotics is a plus.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team in inpatient, ambulatory, or outpatient settings.
• Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews/orders diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulates and manages patient treatment plans.
• Performs procedures, prescribes treatment and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines, and may function as first or second assistant on operative cases.
• Responds to emergency situations within YNHHS parameters.

Patient Education & Psychosocial Support

• Educates patients/families on care, treatment plans, side effects, and discharge instructions in collaboration with the supervising/collaborating physician.
• Provides psychosocial support to patients, family members, and significant others as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Information Management

• Ensures appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements and protects patient information from unauthorized access or disclosure.

Quality Management

• Demonstrates high standards of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
• Ensures compliance with healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.
• Reports safety events and near misses, demonstrating high reliability organizational behaviors.

Professional Development

• Engages in projects to maintain and advance professional competency.
• Serves as a clinical resource for new house staff and provides service-specific orientation.
• Maintains all employee requirements determined by hospital policy.
• May serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other healthcare professionals and mentor pre-PA/NP candidates.
• Collaborates on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects, and assists with the formation of clinical protocols.

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program.
• Clinical working experience as an NP/PA in the specialty/service line is preferred but not required.
• Must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS hospital and complete the Medical Staff credentialing process, including providing evidence of current competence to practice and obtaining appropriate reference letters.

Qualifications

Licensure & Certification

• Active PA Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or equivalent for Nurse Practitioners.
• Connecticut State Physician Assistant License or Connecticut State Registered Nurse License and Connecticut State Nurse Practitioner License.
• Board specialty certification, as appropriate for the position profile.
• ACLS/BLS Certified (when indicated for the position profile).
• DEA License.
• Additional certifications may be required based on position and specialty (e.g., PALS for pediatric profiles, NRP for neonatal care).
