About the role
As a General Merchandise Team Leader, you’ll enable a consistent experience for guests by blending task completion with guest-focused service. Your team will prioritize product availability, replenishment, pricing, signing, and maintaining the sales floor and backroom. You’ll also execute inbound, outbound, and fulfillment responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Consistently deliver an Easy, Inspiring, and Friendly guest experience by training and holding team members accountable to Target’s guest experience commitments.
- Review guest, financial, and team outcome metrics to identify opportunities, drive improvements, and celebrate wins.
- Lead daily/weekly workload execution to meet department and store sales goals, including receiving, merchandising, signing, restocking, and updating sales floor displays.
- Educate your team on how operational procedures (e.g., inventory management, stock levels) impact profitability and product availability.
- Assess reporting to identify gaps in GM processes and assist in developing resolution plans for leader review.
- Assign tasks based on workload and guest traffic patterns, ensuring alignment with business priorities.
- Help establish clear goals, expectations, and accountability for team members with guidance from your direct leader.
- Lead pick, pack, and ship fulfillment work accurately (if applicable) and assess reporting to address gaps.
- Ensure product is in stock, accurately priced, and signed while prioritizing guest experience and collaborating with all teams to keep the store guest-ready.
- Stay informed about trends and products to educate team members during connection moments.
- Evaluate candidates for open positions and develop a guest-centric team through onboarding, coaching, and skill development.
- Support guest services, including back-up cashier and digital fulfillment, while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local laws (e.g., adult beverage regulations).
- Demonstrate inclusivity by valuing diverse voices, creating equitable experiences, and fostering ethical conduct.
- Lead a safety culture by modeling safe behaviors, correcting hazards, and ensuring team accountability.
- Support merchandise protection strategies, including ordering, storage, and application of best practices.
- Occasionally assume store-level leadership on duty (LOD) responsibilities to enable guest experience during assigned shifts.
- Address all store emergency and compliance needs.
Skills
- Guest service fundamentals and experience building a guest-first culture.
- Retail business fundamentals, including sales trends, inventory management, guest shopping patterns, pricing, and promotions strategies.
- Leading a team by planning workloads, delivering sales goals, and driving process improvements.
- Interviewing, developing, coaching, evaluating, and retaining talent.
- Coaching and training hourly team members with direction from leadership.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Age 18 or older.
- Previous retail experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to lead and hold others accountable.
- Proficiency in communicating via multiple frequency devices, handheld scanners, and other technology.
- Capability to work independently and as part of a team, managing workload and prioritizing tasks.
- Ability to remain focused and composed in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks.
- Welcoming and helpful attitude toward guests and team members.
- Effective communication skills.
- Access all areas of the building to respond to guest or team member issues.
- Interpret instructions, reports, and information accurately.
- Handle cash register operations as needed.
- Climb up and down ladders.
- Scan, handle, and move merchandise efficiently and safely, including lifting up to 44 pounds without assistance.
- Flexible work schedule (nights, weekends, holidays); reliable and prompt attendance required.
- Capable of working in varying temperatures, humidity, and other elements (e.g., Drive-Up, carryout).
- Ability to remain mobile for the duration of a scheduled shift (shift length may vary).
