Position Purpose

The Drug/GM Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of the Drug and General Merchandise (GM) Department to ensure exceptional customer service, sales growth, profitability, inventory accuracy, merchandising excellence, and team development. This position oversees daily department operations, maintains in-stock conditions, executes merchandising programs, manages expenses and shrink, and develops a high-performing team that supports overall store success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Drug and General Merchandise Department.
  • Ensure department conditions consistently meet company standards for cleanliness, organization, safety, and presentation.
  • Execute company initiatives, promotional programs, seasonal sets, and merchandising plans.
  • Maintain department readiness with appropriate inventory levels and product availability.
  • Monitor department performance and implement improvements to increase efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Deliver and promote exceptional customer service throughout the department.
  • Assist customers with product selection, product location, and department inquiries.
  • Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Foster a customer-focused culture that drives satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Ensure associates provide friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient service.
  • Ensure shelves, displays, promotional locations, and seasonal merchandise are fully stocked and properly maintained.
  • Execute planograms, resets, and merchandising programs according to company standards.
  • Maintain accurate pricing, signage, and promotional displays.
  • Monitor sales trends and identify opportunities to drive growth and increase market share.
  • Ensure department presentation supports a positive shopping experience.
  • Manage inventory levels to support sales while minimizing excess stock and shrink.
  • Order merchandise based on sales trends, promotional activity, and business needs.
  • Monitor inventory accuracy and maintain effective replenishment processes.
  • Conduct inventory counts and maintain accurate department records.
  • Identify and implement strategies to improve inventory productivity and reduce losses.
  • Recruit, train, coach, and develop department associates.
  • Establish performance expectations and provide ongoing feedback.
  • Create schedules that align labor needs with business demands.
  • Foster teamwork, accountability, and associate engagement.
  • Support succession planning and employee development opportunities.
  • Manage department labor expenses and operating costs.
  • Monitor sales, gross profit, shrink, and productivity metrics.
  • Develop action plans to improve department performance and profitability.
  • Achieve departmental sales and financial objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to increase efficiency and maximize results.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized department environment.
  • Ensure associates receive required safety and operational training.
  • Monitor product handling, storage, and department security practices.
  • Address safety concerns and operational issues promptly.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous retail merchandising or department management experience preferred.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of inventory management, merchandising, sales planning, and customer service principles.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic computer, scheduling, and reporting skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of merchandise up to company standards.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to safely operate department equipment, pallet jacks, carts, and ladders.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.
