General Manager - Hauling HC
About the role
The General Manager leads one of the Company’s Business Units with full profit-and-loss responsibility for all operational facets. In a matrix-management setting, the role oversees an infrastructure team of division-level managers—Operations, Fleet Management, Sales, Finance, Human Resources, Safety and Environmental Compliance, and Environmental Engineering—who support the entire Business Unit. The General Manager executes a local-market strategy aligned with the Area’s strategic operating and marketing plans, implements tactical initiatives to drive functional excellence and budget achievement, and manages all aspects of collection and/or post-collections operations (transfer stations, landfills, recycling centers, and/or complexes). The position represents the Company to customers, vendors, municipal clients, and other external stakeholders; ensures effective safety and accident-prevention programs; and leads change-management initiatives that contribute to the Business Unit’s growth and durability.
Responsibilities
- Implement and execute plans that complement the Area’s strategic operating plan; champion the execution of the strategic plan and tactical initiatives within the Business Unit, including operating safely, enhancing customer experience, improving efficiency, and maximizing profitability.
- Collaborate with Area and Region sales management to drive commercial, industrial, residential, and municipal sales efforts within the Business Unit to achieve targeted growth objectives, exceed customer-experience expectations, and optimize profitability.
- Oversee effective safety and accident-prevention programs to ensure all reasonable actions are taken to prevent accidents and injuries; maintain a safe and productive work environment for all employees.
- Lead operations to ensure compliance with all standards, including environmental, operating, regulatory, safety, accounting, and ethics.
- Manage performance and talent development.
- Build and maintain strong, effective relations with relevant government, community, and environmental groups.
- Travel by air, car, and/or other modes up to 30% of the time.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership and management responsibility.
- Minimum of 3 years of P & L experience.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in the environmental services industry (preferred).
- Previous employment by a Fortune 500 company (preferred).
- Experience in labor relations (preferred).
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership and management responsibility (preferred).
