About the role
The General Manager leads one of the Company’s Business Units, holding full profit-and-loss responsibility for all operational facets. In a matrix-management setting, the role oversees division-level managers in Operations, Fleet Management, Sales, Finance, Human Resources, Safety and Environmental Compliance, and Environmental Engineering. The General Manager executes a local-market strategy aligned with the Area’s strategic plans, implements tactical initiatives to drive functional excellence and budget achievement, and manages collection and/or post-collections operations (transfer stations, landfills, recycling centers). The position represents the Company to customers, vendors, municipal clients, and external stakeholders, ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and drives change-management initiatives for Business Unit growth and durability.
Responsibilities
- Implement and execute plans complementing the Area’s strategic operating plan; champion execution of the strategic plan and tactical initiatives within the Business Unit, including operating safely, enhancing customer experience, improving efficiency, and maximizing profitability.
- Collaborate with Area and Region sales management to drive commercial, industrial, residential, and municipal sales efforts to achieve targeted growth objectives, exceed customer experience expectations, and optimize profitability.
- Oversee effective safety and accident prevention programs to ensure all reasonable actions are taken to prevent accidents and injuries; maintain a safe and productive work environment.
- Lead operations to ensure compliance with all standards, including environmental, operating, regulatory, safety, accounting, and ethics.
- Manage performance and talent development.
- Build and maintain strong relations with relevant government, community, and environmental groups.
- Travel up to 30% of the time by air, car, or other modes of transportation.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership and management responsibility.
- Minimum of 3 years of profit-and-loss (P&L) experience.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated business acumen, strategic thinking, and ability to execute against formulated strategy.
- Ability to lead large-scale change initiatives.
- Experience directing large teams of functional experts to execute corporate strategy.
- Ability to build strong sales teams, select top candidates, and coach and develop talent.
- Process- and results-oriented, with a commitment to organizational success and marshaling resources to accomplish goals.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, critical-thinking, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to optimize near-term results contributing to long-term sustainable success.
- Collaborative team-builder with creative thinking to challenge conventional solutions.
- Demonstrates and promotes ethical behavior.
- Experience managing an extended span of control, including multiple sites and business lines (e.g., hauling, landfills, recycling, new business).
- Previous experience in the environmental services industry.
- Previous employment by a Fortune 500 company.
- Experience in labor relations.
