General Maintenance Worker- Nantahala Ranger District

Responsibilities
- Perform simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades.
- Perform routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools or heavy equipment to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances.
- Conduct pre-season safety and hazard tree inspections.
- Pressure wash and paint interior and exterior areas.
- Replace signs, gravel at campsites, and site furnishings as needed.
- Perform water and wastewater systems maintenance including repairing or replacing sinks, showers, water heaters, toilet risers, water distribution and wastewater collection piping.
- Replace electrical receptacles, wires, switches, and fixtures.
- Repair building finishes, doors, windows, and carpentry.
- Operate power equipment such as lawn mowers and all types of hand tools to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc.
- Perform janitorial duties and garbage removal, as needed in back-up support
- Perform routine assessments of facilities, water systems, and wastewater systems using standard forms and according to clear and specified direction.
- Travel to project locations for maintenance work and activities, as needed, via privately owned vehicle.
Qualifications
- Authorization to work in the U.S. permanently without sponsorship.
- A High School diploma or equivalent.
- Practical skill and knowledge in such trades as:
- Carpentry
- Plumbing
- Masonry
- Painting
- Electrical
- Landscaping
- A minimum of (5) years of experience working in relevant trades.
- Ability to use, maintain, and repair tools and equipment.
- Ability to work independently and without more than normal supervision.
- Strength and mobility to work in a typical field setting.
- Ability to frequently lift, carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
- Stamina to navigate uneven terrain and construction sites, including standing, walking, and climbing for up to 8 hours a day.
- Adequate vision to read printed materials and computer screens
- Hearing and speech adequate to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone.
- Ability and willingness to perform work in austere weather conditions, in the presence of loud noise, at heights exceeding 10 feet, and in environments that commonly include exposure to dust and noxious odors.
