General Maintenance Worker I (Two positions available)

About the Role

A skilled facility and campus maintenance worker performing a wide range of tasks including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC at a level not requiring formal schooling or licensure. Handles project-related work, emergency calls, and preventive maintenance while adhering to federal safety and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

• Uses hand, pneumatic, and power tools to perform assigned work.
• Operates multimeters and other testing equipment as needed.
• Checks wear on equipment parts (e.g., v-belts, oil and water levels) to identify conditions that could lead to equipment failure.
• Inspects and maintains heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems; replaces filters, greases, and oils equipment parts.
• Resets tripped breakers, replaces fuses, and makes minor repairs to existing light fixtures.
• Cuts and installs replacement ceiling tiles.
• Inspects, repairs, cleans, and maintains shop equipment, tools, vehicles, carpet cleaners, vacuums, shop vacs, floor buffers, and assorted electronic appliances.
• Completes truck and shop inventories as assigned; cleans and organizes storage and equipment rooms.
• Maintains an organized work area, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and security of materials.
• Repairs or replaces damaged plumbing fixtures (e.g., sinks, toilets, showers, tubs, water heaters, sump pumps, electronic flush valves, faucets, and drinking fountains).
• Unclogs drains using manual or mechanical augers.
• Assists co-workers to facilitate timely and safe repairs.
• Makes adjustments to doors and locks.
• Provides access through walls, floors, and other structures by dismantling or cutting barriers for repairs or new installations.
• Restores work sites to their original condition after completing projects (e.g., removing debris, returning furniture, cleaning, painting, or replacing tiles).
• Responds to trouble calls to ensure efficient daily operations of the university.
• Participates in storm cleanup or other emergencies (natural or manmade).
• Works required overtime for events, student activities, and emergency call-out situations.
• Maintains knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements for facilities maintenance.
• Complies with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, and chemical substances.
• Interprets schematic drawings, blueprints, operation manuals, and vendor literature.
• Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the Marshall University School of Medicine, including supporting other shops/trades.
