Under general supervision, performs unskilled and semiskilled work in the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. Employees in this role perform a variety of tasks and assignments in support of skilled maintenance work (e.g., landscaping, roads/grounds, construction, etc.). Operates a variety of manual and power tools and equipment. As employees gain experience, they may be assigned more difficult tasks of a semiskilled nature. Performs routine and repetitive tasks without close supervision but receives specific work instructions at the start of new tasks.

Some assignments involve exposure to inclement weather, accident and injury hazards, and disagreeable work environments including dirt, dust, extreme temperatures, odors, and grease. Workers must observe safety procedures and wear specialized protective clothing or equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform unskilled and semiskilled maintenance tasks in buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Operate manual and power tools, power mowers, tractors, light trucks, and commercial trucks with trailers.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of commercial trucks and equipment.
  • Assist with landscaping, road/grounds maintenance, construction, snow removal, graffiti removal, and recycling programs.
  • Follow oral and written instructions, and complete basic written reports and work orders.
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, occasionally under adverse conditions.
  • Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the MCPS General Maintenance Worker written (knowledge) and hands-on (demonstration) skills test at the minimum or higher required score.
  • Basic knowledge of safe work practices and procedures in maintenance work.
  • Working mechanical knowledge of commercial trucks and equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of practices and procedures for skilled maintenance and repair work (e.g., asphalt, concrete, power equipment operation, fencing, snow removal, landscaping, graffiti removal).
  • Knowledge of county recycling programs.
  • Ability to operate commercial trucks with trailers to move large equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and complete basic written reports and work orders.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, including lifting and moving objects up to 100 lbs.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a ninth-grade education (additional education desirable).
  • Documented experience in building maintenance and general construction/maintenance work.
  • Completion of in-service training courses or equivalent.
  • Other combinations of education, training, and experience providing the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.

Special Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B within 6 months of employment.
  • Considered emergency personnel; required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as required.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift and move very heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Perform strenuous labor, occasionally under adverse conditions (e.g., extreme temperatures, inclement weather).

Pay

The wage range for this position is between $21.80 and $29.32 per hour, based on years of service.
