Summary Description
Under general supervision, performs unskilled and semiskilled work in the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. Performs a variety of tasks and assignments in support of skilled maintenance work (e.g., landscaping, roads/grounds, construction, etc.). Operates a variety of manual and power tools and equipment to carry out their assignments.
Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Required to wear personal protective equipment as required.
Physical Demands
- Ability to perform work requiring the lifting and moving of very heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
- Perform routine and repetitive tasks without close supervision but typically receive specific work instructions at the beginning of any new task or assignment.
- Some assignments involve exposure to inclement weather and employees are subject to accident and injury hazards/risks and very disagreeable work environments including dirt, dust, extreme temperatures, odors, grease, etc.
Special Requirements
- Must have a valid Maryland driver's license and obtain CDL within 6 months of position.

- Wage range for this position is between $21.80 and $29.32 per hour, based on years of service.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of safe work practices and procedures used in maintenance work.
- Working mechanical knowledge of commercial trucks and equipment to complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Basic knowledge of practices and procedures followed when performing more skilled maintenance and repair work (e.g., asphalt, concrete, power equipment operation, fencing, snow removal, landscaping, graffiti removal, etc.)
- Knowledge of county recycling program.
- Ability to operate commercial trucks with trailers to move large equipment site to site.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and complete basic written reports and work orders about the work performed.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, occasionally in adverse work conditions.
- Ability to operate a variety of equipment including hand and power tools, power mowers, tractors, and light trucks.
- Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Education, Training, and Experience
- Completion of a ninth grade education required.
- Additional education levels accomplished desirable.
- Completion of in-service training courses or equivalent.
- Documented experience in performing building maintenance and general construction/maintenance work.
Certificate, License, and Other Requirements
- Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver's license.
- Ability to Acquire a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B within 6 months of starting date of employment required.
