General Maintenance Technician

About the Role

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Facilities, maintain school buildings and grounds in orderly, neat, safe, and operable condition.

Responsibilities

• Perform tasks to keep school buildings and grounds in orderly, neat, and clean condition, such as clearing and disposing of trash, cleaning bathrooms and floors, washing windows, dusting furniture and fixtures, mowing grass, and related tasks.
• Maintain buildings and grounds in safe and operable condition, including making minor repairs, clearing snow and ice, and related tasks.
• Inspect equipment and facilities, and recommend repair or replacement action to supervisor.
• Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate seasonal temperatures and ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
• Check all building entrances/exits to ensure proper functionality.
• Open and close buildings, ensuring all doors and windows are securely locked before leaving.
• Maintain motors and other mechanical equipment, ensuring scheduled servicing.
• Obtain equipment, tools, and materials required for assigned work.
• Maintain inventory of supplies, materials, equipment, and fuel, placing orders as needed.
• Prepare and maintain records to document work and repairs as requested.
• Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

• Knowledge of fundamental tools, materials, practices, maintenance, methods, and procedures in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades.
• Knowledge of building code conformance standards for carpentry, plumbing, electricity, electrical installation, and repair.
• Knowledge of occupational safety and health laws and regulations.
• Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor and coordinate work with others.
• Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
• Ability to perform basic arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure).
• Ability to describe maintenance or repair problems orally or in writing.
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues.
• Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others.

Equipment

Uses hand tools of the trade and related power equipment, including saws, drills, routers, planers, sanders, jointers, and stationary power equipment.

Physical and Mental Demands

• Ability to work at heights and in crawl spaces.
• Typical risks associated with using tools of the trade.
• Occasional strenuous physical work.
• Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.

Travel Requirements

Frequent travel between schools or between schools and central offices may be required.

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications include:

• High School Diploma.
• Successful experience in building and grounds maintenance and repair.
• Motor Vehicle Operator’s license or ability to provide own transportation.
