About the Role

The General Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining the university's buildings, facilities, and grounds in a safe, functional, and attractive condition. This position performs a variety of preventive maintenance, repair, and general maintenance tasks to support the daily operations of the campus and contributes to a safe and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors by responding promptly to maintenance requests.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all safety standards, work practices, policies, and procedures established by the University, Manager of Facilities, and supervisor.
  • Program, operate, and monitor the performance of the computerized climate control system; perform maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to ensure proper operation of boilers, pumps, water heaters, air handling units, pneumatic systems, fans, and related equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance on building mechanical systems; repair and/or replace pumps and motors, change belts and filters, and lubricate moving parts.
  • Perform maintenance tasks such as minor equipment repairs, lock repair or replacement, install shelves and cabinets, move furniture and equipment, etc.
  • Remove snow and ice from campus areas and walkways; spread salt on walkways and entrances.
  • On-call responsibilities to respond to heating/cooling system breakdowns or malfunctions and other facility emergencies.
  • Event set up and break down.
  • Perform related duties as required or directed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or certifications in related field(s).
  • 1 year of commercial maintenance experience.
  • Basic carpentry skills.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, electric, and HVAC systems.

Physical Requirements

Work requires standing, bending, lifting, stooping, or performing other tasks requiring moderate to heavy physical exertion (up to 50 pounds) on an intermittent basis. Frequent walking is also required. Occasional heavy lifting (up to 30 pounds) may be needed (up to 15% of the time).

Environmental Conditions

Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant or undesirable elements, including potential hazards. Proper precautions must be taken to protect against injury or illness.
