General Maintenance Mechanic

This position is an on-site role at Northern Arizona University. The incumbent must complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility. Driving a university vehicle is a regular part of this position, requiring authorization under the Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy. Employees are considered essential staff and must report to work during university closures, including emergencies. Participation in on-call duties, call-backs, and snow removal—including nights, weekends, and holidays—is required.

Responsibilities

  • 35% - Corrective Maintenance
    • Performs residential and commercial general maintenance repairs and preventive maintenance, responding to service requests based on established priorities.
    • Responds to service calls dispatched via radio, text, or the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
    • Evaluates maintenance issues and coordinates with skilled trades for repairs outside the scope of general maintenance.
    • Adheres to safety requirements, including hazard assessments, PPE, and standard operating procedures.
    • Supports accident prevention and responds to injuries/incidents to maintain a safe work environment.
  • 30% - Preventative Maintenance
    • Proactively identifies and reports potential issues before they impact operations.
    • Performs general plumbing, electrical, and HVAC repairs, including minor fixes to heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning units.
  • 10% - Managing and Recording Work Performance
    • Manages work orders in the CMMS, documenting daily activities, labor hours, and repair scope.
    • Creates and refers work orders to appropriate personnel or departments.
    • Performs basic plumbing, electrical, painting, and carpentry maintenance.
  • 10% - Move Requests
    • Plans and assesses furniture, equipment, and departmental moves for proper coordination.
    • Drives trucks to transport materials such as furniture, supplies, or equipment.
  • 10% - On-Call First Response
    • Responds to emergency maintenance issues outside normal operating hours.
    • Refers out-of-scope emergencies to appropriate on-call trades.
    • Participates in on-call rotation for after-hours support.
  • 5% - Other Duties
    • Performs snow removal around university buildings and facilities.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 1 year of general maintenance or repair experience.
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training may substitute for the minimum qualifications.
