General Helper - 2nd Shift

About the Role

This position performs a variety of technical operations and exhibits exceptional quality and quantity. The General Helper role is critical to the success and flow of the machine shop, with the top priority of supporting CNC Machinists. Works under general supervision. Although based in Newton, NJ, occasional duties may be required at other Thorlabs locations.

Responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance such as sweeping, mopping, and emptying trash cans
• Efficiently unload trucks, cut stock, and deliver material to specific machines
• Machine various parts on manual equipment with guidance from set-up crew
• Run production parts on CNC machines, deburr, and operate laser engraver
• Finish parts by tumbling, polishing extrusions, and bead blasting
• Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas
• Meet company standards for quantity and quality of work
• Adhere to company policies, procedures, and workplace behavior standards

Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of experience in a maintenance shop or manufacturing environment
• High School diploma or equivalent
• Strong sense of ethical conduct
• Ability to take initiative and work well in a group atmosphere
• Compliance with high-quality standards
• Ability to shift tasks to address changing production priorities
• Problem-solving skills for practical situations with limited standardization
• Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Physical Demands

• Work may be active, involving standing or sitting for long durations and/or performing repetitious tasks
• Lift or move objects up to 20 pounds
• Grasp, manipulate, or assemble small parts and components
• Moderate to noisy work environment at times
• Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments
• Safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants, and solvents
• Safe operation of job-related equipment and tools

Pay

Hourly rate for this position is $18.00, plus a shift differential of $3.50 per hour.

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 3:45 p.m. - 12:15 a.m.
