General Foreman

General Summary

Supervises and coordinates the work of a crew of workers within a specific craft or trade. Ensures employees do their jobs skillfully and efficiently while making sure assigned work progresses in a timely manner.

Essential Job Accountabilities

• Coordinating daily tasks according to priorities and plans, making changes when necessary due to weather, supply, delivery and personnel
• Delegating individual responsibilities and projects to crew members and contractors
• Recruiting, hiring, training, managing and mentoring employees and contractors
• Providing adequate resources and staffing to meet project schedules, laws, regulations, best practices and safety needs
• Emphasizing safe use of tools, machinery and equipment while providing training on safety gear, helmets and procedures
• Developing and managing project budgets and quality standards for all sites
• Resolving conflicts or miscommunications quickly and amicably
• Regularly reporting project status to supervisors, site engineers and other officials

Education and Work Experience

• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
• Years of experience appropriate for training and experience required

• Customer-service skills to communicate with inspectors and administration
• Decision-making skills for selecting personnel and subcontractors
• Leadership skills for effectively delegating tasks
• Speaking skills for providing clear orders, explaining complex information and discussing technical details
• Technical skills for interpreting construction methods and technologies, contracts, and technical drawings
• Time-management skills to meet deadlines and ensure construction phases are completed on time
• Writing skills for writing budgets, proposals and plans, and documenting work progress
