About the Role

Staff Accountants work in the Accounting department and perform a variety of duties such as maintaining the general ledger (GL), preparing journal entries and financial reports, assisting with audits and budgeting processes, and reconciling low-medium risk GL accounts. Staff Accountants have comprehensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of accounting and possess an intermediate level of expertise in Accounting, capable of assisting less experienced team members. Mastery of all Jr. Accountant functions is required.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to analyze, reconcile, and record intermediate-level financial transactions into the Enterprise Resource System (ERP) while maintaining supporting documentation and audit trail.
  • Monitor transactions for compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Prepare timely and accurate reporting of financial results for all Connecticut Children’s affiliated companies.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to Jr. Accountants and train new team members as directed.
  • Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting, procedural, and GAAP standards.
  • Prepare asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information and entering journal entries and supporting documentation into the ERP.
  • Document financial transactions by entering account information into the ERP.
  • Summarize current financial status by collecting information and preparing balance sheets, profit and loss statements, cash flow statements, and other analytical and statistical reports.
  • Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents and ensuring compliance with GAAP and internal policies.
  • Prepare special financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends.
  • Maintain accounting controls by recommending enhancements to policies and updating standard operating procedures.
  • Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information to ensure accurate trial balances for all companies and that GL and sub-ledger systems are in balance.
  • Maintain financial security by following internal controls.
  • Maintain and reconcile fixed assets schedules and roll forwards, capital budget activities, depreciation schedules, and lease accounting schedules in compliance with current GAAP guidance and internal policies.
  • Prepare analyses, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for internal and external audits, various tax returns, and surveys.
  • Prepare invoices, post payments, and reconcile non-patient accounts receivable utilizing automated systems.
  • Participate in testing, training, and reconciliation on ERP system implementation and upgrades.
  • Demonstrate support for the mission, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors consistent with the CCMC STANDARDS.

Supervisory Responsibilities: No formal supervisory responsibilities. Responsible for training new accounting team members and providing guidance and oversight to Jr. Accountants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated intermediate knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Advanced math and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with intermediate financial transactions such as Grant Accounting, Fund Accounting, and/or Non-Profit Accounting.

  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Intermediate knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles.
  • Experience with ERP systems.
  • Intermediate analytical and reconciliation skills.
  • Research and problem-solving skills.
  • Time management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to compile, organize, tabulate, categorize, verify, and audit financial data.
  • Attention to detail and ability to read, understand, and follow policies.
  • Professional, timely, and clear communication (written and verbal).
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently.
  • Ability to perform intermediate financial analysis.
