Job Summary
The Staff Accountant I supports the financial operations for Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC), which includes hospitals, physician practices, and a variety of other healthcare services. This intermediate-level role is responsible for preparing accurate financial reports, analyzing account activity, supporting audits and budgeting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and healthcare regulations.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Prepares routine to intermediate journal entries and reconciles inter-company transactions.
- Reconciles bank statements and other balance sheet account schedules.
- Reviews and reconciles sub-system postings to general ledger accounts for accuracy and completeness.
- Prepares monthly financial statements at both the entity and departmental levels in accordance with GAAP.
- Analyzes balance sheet accounts, reserves, and accruals, making necessary adjustments as needed.
- Performs monthly income statement variance analysis and assists operational leaders in understanding financial results.
- Assists in the preparation and review of annual budgets and forecasts, including supporting schedules and data analysis.
- Prepares and reviews schedules and reports required for internal and external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting.
- Researches accounting standards and healthcare-specific regulations to ensure proper treatment of transactions.
- Monitors compliance with internal financial controls and recommends improvements where needed.
- Assists with month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
- Collaborates with departments to provide financial insights and respond to reporting needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree is required. Preferably in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of three years of accounting experience is required.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and familiarity with healthcare accounting standards and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel); experience with Workday is preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly.

- Constant (67-100% of workday) sitting and use of arms and hands; occasional (0-33% of workday) standing, walking, bending, squatting; ability to lift, push, and pull up to 10 lbs.; auditory and visual skills.
