The Gas Utility Engineer will support the design, installation, and ongoing performance of natural gas distribution infrastructure within a large-scale utility environment. Applying engineering principles from initial design through field installation, this role will develop calculations and drawings, evaluate system requirements, support capital investment decisions, and manage multiple construction-related projects. The Gas Utility Engineer will also collaborate with field personnel, contractors, agencies, and local utilities to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with engineering and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering designs, calculations, estimates, studies, and coordination for gas distribution facility installations.
  • Analyze system loads, pressure requirements, future growth, and other variables during the design process.
  • Develop pipeline layouts, equipment sizing, specifications, and supporting engineering documentation.
  • Create engineering drawings and communicate design requirements to field personnel and contractors.
  • Conduct distribution system pressure and cathodic protection studies.
  • Manage engineering projects through field installation while monitoring schedules, costs, and construction requirements.
  • Coordinate with external agencies, utilities, suppliers, and other stakeholders regarding line locations and planned projects.
  • Prepare economic justifications, budgets, and completion reports supporting capital investment decisions.
  • Review completed work orders and project costs for conformance with plans and construction requirements.
  • Evaluate distribution system operations and troubleshoot engineering and operational issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Civil, or another approved engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 2 years of utility design or related project construction design experience.
  • Experience performing engineering calculations, estimates, technical studies, and construction-related design.
  • Knowledge of gas distribution systems, pipeline design, pressure analysis, and/or cathodic protection preferred.
  • Knowledge of DOT CFR 192 regulations and utility engineering requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
  • Experience with or ability to learn SAP EDS and FIN modules, MicroStation, Stoner, and ArcInfo.
  • Project management experience involving schedules, budgets, construction activities, and multiple concurrent projects.
  • Valid state driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Ability to travel to project and field locations, including occasional overnight travel.
  • Ability to work occasional overtime, nights, or weekends as project requirements dictate.
