Gas Gen Training Tech - Operations

This role supports the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of a combined cycle generation facility. Staff will be located at W. S. Lee Combined Cycle until the Anderson County facilities are available in 2029.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for operations, maintenance, and balance of plant functions required at the facility.
  • Perform operation, planned and unplanned maintenance on substation equipment.
  • Perform and follow Lock-Out-Tag-Out procedures on equipment such as HRSGs, steam turbines, gas turbines, pumps, valves, chillers, and high voltage equipment.
  • Perform record keeping duties concerning Environmental, Health & Safety records, spreadsheets, and documents.
  • Able to make repairs to steam turbine auxiliary, prime movers, and balance of plant equipment at a Combustion Turbine facility.
  • Ability to read and understand technical OEM manuals, recommendations, and warranty agreements.
  • Support and follow safety guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain water treatment facilities such as reverse osmosis, demineralizers; and perform chemical treatment for equipment such as evaporators and HRSGs.
  • Perform and monitor combustion and steam turbine plant equipment through normal operations, testing, and emergency-type events.
  • General mechanical and electrical skills and knowledge to troubleshoot, maintain, and operate a combustion turbine site.
  • Perform inventory duties, generating spare parts lists, min/max levels, and revising inventory lists as required.
  • Read and understand technical mechanical, civil, and electrical drawings.
  • General knowledge and ability to perform high voltage switching.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma/GED.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Working knowledge of the overall operating fundamentals and principles of generating station systems, equipment, and processes.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work within a team-oriented environment and demonstrate team interface skills.
  • Basic computer skills utilizing Windows applications, emails, and work management software.
  • Skills, attitude, and ability to work safely.
  • Positive work attitude, initiative, and the ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work independently without the need for close supervision but can also function well in a team environment.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Successfully complete EEI's Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) and Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS).
  • Successfully complete a Power Plant Physical Abilities Assessment and a medical physical including a respirator fit test.
  • Complete levels of Employee Development and Qualification Program training.
  • Ability to work around equipment that generates electromagnetic fields (EMF).
  • This position contains a weight restriction of 325 pounds as an essential function of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree and 2 years of related experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and control logic.
  • Proficiency with computers, software applications, and plant work management software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and maintenance management systems like Maximo, Passport, or equivalent.
  • Additional years of experience with combustion turbine technology.
  • High voltage and substation maintenance and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with mechanical and electronic field-testing equipment.
  • Experience with digital control systems, programmable logic controllers, and multi-fueled technologies.
  • Knowledge of heavy lifting cranes and rigging requirements.

Work Conditions

  • Able to work/respond on short notice to support planned/unplanned/emergency site events.
  • Work schedule requires rotating shift work, weekend work, and holidays.
  • Required to wear a respirator and must successfully complete a physical and respirator fit test on an annual or as-needed basis.
  • Must be able to work at heights, from suspended work platforms, and in confined spaces.
  • Field work in a Combustion and Steam Turbine facility includes exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, and humidity.
  • Willing to travel approximately 5-10% for training and to assist other Duke Energy Carolinas Combustion Turbine sites when required.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF).
  • May be exposed to high-stress situations.
  • Required to climb ladders and stairs at various heights; enter vessels or equipment with limited access.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, kneel, push, pull, climb ladders, work in extreme heat or cold, walk/work on grating surfaces at extreme heights.
