About the role
The Gallery Attendant is a part-time staff member responsible for the safety and security of works of art on view in the Behnke Family Gallery. This role represents the College and art exhibits to visitors while ensuring the protection of the artwork. The schedule supports the Gallery's regular public hours, including opening and closing duties, and may include additional hours for gallery installation and special events.
Responsibilities
- Interact with visitors to provide information, context for exhibitions, and general assistance.
- Record daily visitor numbers and participate in community outreach opportunities.
- Protect works of art from theft, vandalism, and accidental damage by monitoring visitors, including enforcing restrictions on touching art and prohibited items.
- Remain knowledgeable about gallery exhibitions, public programs, events, and scheduled activities.
- Attend and participate in mandatory meetings and trainings.
- Work special events, performances, opening receptions, public programs, and other assigned programs.
- Assist with exhibition installation and striking between weeks of public gallery hours.
- Respond quickly and calmly to emergencies and assist others during emergencies.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of work and storage areas.
Requirements
- College graduate or equivalent.
- Previous customer service experience desired.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with staff, faculty, curators, students, and the public.
- Exercise composure and diplomacy; demonstrate creative problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Understanding of protocol and sensitivity to cultural diversity needs.
- Act as a team player who works well with others and shows courtesy and respect to colleagues.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

Schedule
- Public Gallery Hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 12 PM – 5 PM.
- Work Weeks: 12 months, 20 hours weekly, following the Behnke exhibition calendar and holiday/breaks.
Pay
$23.00 per hour.
