About the role

This is a 0.5 FTE (half-time) position within the County of Dane.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) for children in juvenile court proceedings, advocating for their best interests.
• Conduct thorough investigations, including interviews with children, parents, caregivers, and professionals involved in the case.
• Prepare written reports and recommendations for the court regarding placement, services, and permanency planning.
• Attend court hearings, mediations, and other legal proceedings as required.
• Collaborate with attorneys, social workers, service providers, and other stakeholders to ensure the child’s needs are met.
• Monitor court orders and case plans to ensure compliance and progress toward case goals.
• Maintain accurate and timely case documentation in accordance with legal and agency standards.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited school of social work or a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) with at least two years of post-degree social work experience.
• Current licensure as a Social Worker in the State of Wisconsin (or eligibility for licensure within six months of hire).
• Knowledge of child welfare systems, juvenile court processes, and relevant state and federal laws (e.g., Wisconsin Children’s Code, Indian Child Welfare Act).
• Strong assessment, interviewing, and report-writing skills.
• Ability to work independently, manage a caseload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations, including children, families, and professionals.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel within Dane County.
• Ability to pass a background check, including criminal history and child protective services records.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in child welfare, juvenile court, or related social work practice.
• Bilingual skills (Spanish, Hmong, or other languages spoken in Dane County).
• Familiarity with trauma-informed care and culturally responsive practice.
• Experience with case management software and electronic documentation systems.

Schedule

• Part-time, 0.5 FTE (20 hours per week).
• Flexible scheduling with some evening or weekend availability required for court hearings or meetings.
