Summary Description

This paraeducator performs a variety of tasks to promote student learning and well-being, supporting students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). They may assist students in various areas including academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical support. The paraeducator works in general education classes and specialized settings, and supports a range of special education services.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates student mastery of grade-level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards
  • Manages behaviors impacting student access to curriculum
  • Supports teachers and other staff in classroom management and related clerical tasks
  • Performs outside duties as required
  • Supports special education services such as PEP, Transition, DHOH, Speech, Vision, Physical Impairments, Elementary Learning Center, Bridge, Autism Resource Services (ARS), Autism Connections

Physical Demands and Special Requirements

  • Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 pounds
  • Outside duty may be required
  • Must accommodate flexible scheduling and changes in location and/or program
  • Continues planned instructional activities during teacher absence

Job Specific Information

  • 3.5 hours of Autism Paraeducator and 1 hour of Lunch/Recess Aide (4.5 hours combined position)
  • Wage range: $26.23 - $40.17 per hour, based on years of service

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and policies of Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Ability to assist with implementation of the instructional program and monitor student behavior
  • Ability to exhibit patient behavior and work effectively with children, young adults, and staff members
  • Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to read/write/speak English
  • Ability to interact with and support students with special needs
  • Knowledge of standard computer hardware and software
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS)

Education, Training, And Experience

  • Associate’s degree, required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • College course work should include a minimum of nine credit-hours related to education field such as behavior management, instructional strategies
  • One year of experience working with students in structured educational (or academic) situations preferred
  • If no related education course work, then two to four years of experience working with children and adolescents in a structured setting such as a daycare, pre-school, etc. required
  • OR
  • At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in a structured setting such as a daycare, pre-school, adult day program, after-school program, extended day, or school/non-school based departments, etc.

  • Two years of experience in a structured setting such as a daycare, pre-school, adult day program, after-school program, extended day, or school/non-school based departments, etc.
  • Successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455 or higher is required
