About the Role

Employees in these classes are assigned to the shift working the later afternoon, evening, and night hours. They are responsible for the cleanliness, upkeep, and security of the assigned facility while on duty. At the direction of the building service manager, they supervise workers performing assigned afternoon and evening cleaning duties. The size of the staff supervised varies with the facility's size and complexity.

Incumbents typically represent school administration when interacting with staff and community groups authorized to use classrooms and other facilities. The assistant manager’s classification and pay grade is determined annually based on factors such as facility size, projected facilities use, and the number of relocatable classrooms, but may not exceed the pay grade of the facility’s building service manager.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and inspect the work of building service personnel.
  • Maintain cleanliness, upkeep, and security of the facility.
  • Operate and perform minor adjustments or repairs to central heating plants and related equipment.
  • Train, assign, and evaluate subordinate staff.
  • Maintain records of time, materials, and prepare routine reports.
  • Interact with students, teachers, school leadership, and the public while demonstrating core competencies: commitment to students, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, organization, and problem-solving.
  • Adhere to building security procedures.

Requirements

  • Sufficient physical strength and freedom from disabling defects to lift and move heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.) and perform manual labor.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, and practices used in building service work, including the proper use and care of cleaning equipment (e.g., mops, brooms, waxing machines).
  • Working knowledge of safe and efficient procedures for operating central heating plants and ability to make minor adjustments and repairs.
  • Thorough knowledge of building security procedures.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare routine reports.
  • Demonstrated core competencies: commitment to students, job knowledge, professionalism, interpersonal skills, communication, organization, and problem-solving.
  • Knowledge of and ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Qualifications

  • Completion of the ninth grade required; high school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Varied experience of increasing responsibility in the cleaning and general upkeep of a school building.
  • Some positions require additional experience in the responsible supervision of building service personnel.
  • Possession of a current valid boiler certificate and stationary engineer’s license (indicating proficiency in operating low-pressure boilers) preferred.
  • Satisfactory completion of training activities established for these classifications.
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.

Special Requirements

  • Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and must report to buildings during inclement weather or other emergency situations.
  • Frequent overtime or night work may be required.
  • Uniforms are provided and must be worn as proper attire.
  • Employees must provide and maintain a current working telephone number with their supervisor.

Pay

The wage range for this position is between $22.59 and $31.99 per hour, based on years of service.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 12-month position.
  • Evening shift.
