Funeral Services Education Adjunct Assistant Professor

Los Rios Community College District is seeking qualified candidates for a part-time, temporary (Adjunct) faculty position in the Funeral Services Education program.

About the Role

The adjunct faculty member will teach assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean, help students master course content, assess student learning outcomes, and maintain up-to-date knowledge in funeral service education. Responsibilities include professional development, utilizing current technology, maintaining professional conduct, assisting with curriculum development, serving on college committees, and participating in faculty governance and student co-curricular activities.

Responsibilities

• Teach courses in the Funeral Service Education Program, including but not limited to:
  • FSE 297: Practicum in Funeral Service Education
  • FSE 300: Introduction to Funeral Service
  • FSE 312: Funeral Directing II
  • FSE 330: Merchandising in the Funeral Service Industry
  • FSE 365: Embalming II
  • FSE 370: Funeral Service Counseling
• Educate students in subject areas such as:
  • Funeral Service Directing
  • Merchandising
  • Counseling
  • Management
  • Law and Ethics
  • Embalming
• Focus on key program objectives, including:
  • Explaining the role of funeral service professionals in developing relationships with families and communities
  • Identifying standards of ethical conduct in funeral service practice
  • Interpreting federal, state, and local laws applicable to funeral service
  • Applying principles of public health and safety in handling and preparing human remains
  • Demonstrating technical skills in embalming and restorative art
  • Conducting arrangement conferences, visitations, services, and ceremonies
  • Describing procedures for burial, cremation, and other forms of final disposition
  • Addressing grief-related needs of the bereaved
  • Explaining management skills for operating a funeral establishment
  • Demonstrating verbal, written, and research skills needed for funeral service practice
• Maintain program accreditation standards set by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE), including:
  • Preparing students to be members of a human services profession
  • Fostering community engagement and relationships between bereaved families and funeral service professionals
  • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory guidelines
  • Prioritizing public health, safety, and welfare in caring for human remains

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of professional experience OR any associate degree and six years of professional experience OR equivalent* (professional experience must be directly related to the assignment being taught)
• All degrees must be from an accredited institution and completed by time of hire

Pay

$48.37 - $146.67 hourly. Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate-level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract.
