Funeral Services Education Adjunct Assistant Professor

About the Role

The Los Rios Community College District is seeking qualified candidates for a part-time, temporary (Adjunct) faculty position in the Funeral Service Education Program. The adjunct faculty member will teach assigned classes, support student learning, and contribute to the program's mission of preparing students for professional practice in funeral service.

Responsibilities

• Teach assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean.
• Help students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content and assessing student learning outcomes.
• Maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in the teaching field and engage in continuing professional development.
• Utilize current technology in the performance of job duties.
• Maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
• Assist with articulation, curriculum development, and review.
• Serve on college committees and participate in faculty governance, including accreditation and student co-curricular activities.
• Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean.

Instructional Duties

The instructional assignment may include teaching courses in the following areas:

• Funeral Service Directing
• Merchandising
• Counseling
• Management
• Law and Ethics
• Embalming

Specific courses may include:

• FSE 297: Practicum in Funeral Service Education
• FSE 300: Introduction to Funeral Service
• FSE 312: Funeral Directing II
• FSE 330: Merchandising in the Funeral Service Industry
• FSE 365: Embalming II
• FSE 370: Funeral Service Counseling

The program focuses on:

• Developing relationships with families and communities served by funeral service professionals.
• Identifying standards of ethical conduct in funeral service practice.
• Interpreting federal, state, and local laws applicable to funeral service to ensure compliance.
• Applying principles of public health and safety in handling and preparation of human remains.
• Demonstrating technical skills in embalming and restorative art.
• Conducting arrangement conferences, visitations, services, and ceremonies.
• Describing requirements and procedures for burial, cremation, and other forms of final disposition.
• Addressing grief-related needs of the bereaved.
• Explaining management skills for operating a funeral establishment.
• Demonstrating verbal, written, and research skills needed for funeral service practice.

The Funeral Service Education Program is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) and maintains a focus on:

• Preparing students to be members of a human services profession.
• Engaging students in the communities they serve.
• Fostering relationships between bereaved families and funeral service professionals.
• Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory guidelines.
• Promoting public health, safety, and welfare in caring for human remains.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of professional experience OR any associate degree and six years of professional experience OR the equivalent*. Professional experience must be directly related to the assignment being taught.
• All degrees must be from an accredited institution and completed by the time of hire.

Pay

Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate-level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience (initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 1).
