Fundraising Manager
About the role
Unruled Masses exists to support ordinary people who want to live in communities and systems governed by the rule of law, equal treatment, and leaders who are accountable to the people. We are a nonpartisan organization, and we believe democracy is non‑negotiable. We work to expose and counter corruption— the abuse of entrusted power for private gain that harms the public interest— from the highest levels of political power to the places where people live and work every day, including housing, workplaces, schools, healthcare, and beyond. Our mission is to research and expose abuses of power, educate the public on corruption and related harms, empower people to counter corruption through nonviolent and lawful civic action, and inspire hope through community. We share our research, tools, and training in plain language with the public, partner organizations, journalists, researchers, and policymakers so people can recognize corruption, protect themselves and others, and act together. Unruled Masses is seeking a strategic, high‑energy Fundraising Officer to help build the financial foundation of our 501(c)(3) startup. As we launch our Corruption Intelligence platform and Abuse Library, we need a dedicated leader to turn our mission of transparency and nonviolent resistance into a sustainable, donor‑supported movement. You will design and execute our development strategy, connecting visionary donors, foundations, and a global community of supporters to our work.
Responsibilities
- Develop a Holistic Fundraising Strategy – create and oversee a multi‑channel development plan including major gifts, digital grassroots campaigns, and foundation grants.
- Identify and Cultivate Major Donors – research and build relationships with high‑net‑worth individuals and philanthropic organizations aligned with civil liberties, anti‑corruption, and human rights.
- Lead Digital & Monthly Giving – optimize our digital presence to build a recurring donor base of citizens who want to support the Abuse Library.
- Grant Research & Writing – identify relevant grant opportunities from foundations supporting investigative journalism, democratic resilience, and social justice.
- Event Strategy – conceptualize and coordinate virtual or in‑person “Intelligence Briefings” and donor events that showcase our latest investigations.
- Financial Stewardship – work with the executive team to ensure all fundraising activities are donor‑centric, transparent, and fully compliant with nonprofit regulations.
- Exceptional volunteers may serve as a “Director of Development” on the founding advisory council, be invited for paid opportunities when funding becomes available, lead long‑term planning, mentor junior volunteers in donor relations, and architect a corporate matching‑gift program for values‑aligned businesses.
Requirements
This is an unpaid volunteer role. We ask for a minimum of 3‑5 hours per week to maintain momentum on development goals. As funding allows—partially through the efforts of this role—paid positions may be offered in the future.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated Experience – at least 2‑4 years in nonprofit fundraising, sales, or business development.
- Strategic Thinker – ability to build a “case for support” that resonates with diverse donor tiers.
- Communication Skills – exceptional writing and presentation skills; you can take complex intelligence data and turn it into a compelling narrative for a donor.
- Tech Savvy – familiarity with CRM software (like Salesforce, Hubspot, or Kindful) and digital giving platforms.
- Mission‑Driven – a deep, personal commitment to fighting systemic corruption and institutional capture.
- Network – while not required, an existing network in the philanthropic or social justice space is a significant plus.
Benefits
- Join the Founding Team – be a key architect of the financial engine that powers our flagship program.
- Direct Impact – see the tangible results of your work as your fundraising efforts directly enable new investigations and public alerts.
- Professional Leadership – build a high‑level portfolio demonstrating your ability to scale a startup nonprofit.
- Global Network – collaborate with experienced analysts, investigative journalists, and organizers from across the world.
- Mission Focus – be part of a movement dedicated not just to pointing out what's broken—but to funding the solutions that rebuild agency and community.
