At Northwestern Mutual, our Digital Platform organization is investing in the Business Event Hub, an internal, near-real-time messaging platform built on a Business Domain Driven Architecture. The Hub enables the governed production, short-term storage, and consumption of business events across the enterprise and is continuing to expand into adjacent capabilities.

About the role

As a Fullstack Engineer, you'll help build, support, and enhance the platform capabilities that power event-driven communication across Northwestern Mutual. You'll work on highly available integration services, APIs, messaging technologies, and cloud-enabled solutions while collaborating closely with engineers, product managers, and designers. Our engineering environment is diverse, providing opportunities to contribute across web development, backend services, automation, CI/CD, cloud technologies, and platform engineering initiatives.

This role is ideal for a technically curious engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, taking ownership of outcomes, and contributing to a platform with enterprise-wide impact. You'll work across a diverse technology stack spanning web development, backend services, automation, and CI/CD, making adaptability and a continuous learning mindset essential to success.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, maintain, and support software applications and platform services.
  • Build and enhance solutions using Java, Node.js and/or Kotlin.
  • Develop and support secure REST services, web-sockets, and client applications.
  • Work with highly available data-integration services and message queue technologies.
  • Design and support solutions utilizing relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers in an agile environment.
  • Participate in platform enhancements that improve reliability, scalability, and usability.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
  • Contribute new ideas and innovative approaches to technical challenges.
  • Take ownership of deliverables and help drive outcomes with minimal direction.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of professional experience with Java, Node.js and/or Kotlin.
  • Experience building and operating highly available data-integration services and message queues.
  • Experience developing secure REST services, web-sockets, and client applications.
  • 2+ years of experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
  • Familiarity with front-end technologies including React, Webpack, and OpenAPI.
  • Familiarity with public cloud technologies and platforms including AWS and Azure.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous deployment concepts and practices.

Pay

Pay Range - Start: $98,320.00

Pay Range - End: $147,480.00

We believe in fairness and transparency. Final salaries are based on skills, experience, location, and other factors uncovered during the hiring process. The standard pay structure is listed, but if you’re living in California, New York City, or other eligible locations, geographic-specific pay structures may apply.
