Full Stack Engineer

GDIT is seeking a Full Stack Platform Engineer to join the National Institutes of Health (NIH) CIT Hosting and Storage Services Program. We are looking for a collaborative and technically curious engineer to help build and evolve a self-service Platform as a Service (PaaS) that enables customers to build, deploy, and operate application stacks in Amazon Web Services (AWS). This role requires onsite fingerprinting and the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust (NACI) clearance, which includes a background investigation reviewing personal, criminal, financial, and foreign influence conduct.

About the role

This hybrid role is based in Bethesda, MD, with a requirement of 3 days onsite per week. The ideal candidate combines full-stack software development experience with cloud infrastructure, automation, and modern DevOps practices. You will contribute across the platform, connecting backend services with intuitive web interfaces and developer tooling, while collaborating with an Agile team.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and deliver features across the full technology stack, including TypeScript, Node.js/Express services, REST APIs, React-based user interfaces, and generated API clients.
• Build accessible and responsive user experiences using established components, patterns, and development standards.
• Develop and integrate platform capabilities with AWS services supporting application builds, deployments, identity, storage, networking, and observability.
• Contribute to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) by enhancing Terraform modules and collaborating with Platform Engineers to review infrastructure plans and changes.
• Develop and maintain automated unit, integration, component, and end-to-end tests to improve software quality and reliability.
• Diagnose and resolve application, pipeline, and deployment issues using logs, metrics, and observability tools, delivering fixes through CI/CD workflows.
• Develop and maintain API specifications, technical documentation, and engineering artifacts to support the platform and its users.
• Participate in Agile development activities, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, design discussions, code reviews, demonstrations, and retrospectives.

Requirements

• BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant professional software engineering experience.
• Experience developing and delivering software as part of a collaborative engineering or Agile development team.
• Ability to independently implement well-defined technical features while collaborating with senior engineers on complex design decisions.
• Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Skills

• Hands-on software development experience using TypeScript or JavaScript and Node.js.
• Experience developing web user interfaces using React or a comparable frontend framework.
• Experience designing, developing, or consuming REST APIs using JSON and OpenAPI or comparable specifications.
• Experience writing automated tests and diagnosing failures across frontend, backend, and integration layers.
• Experience with Git-based software development practices, including branching, pull requests, code reviews, and CI/CD workflows.
• Working knowledge of AWS services and cloud architecture concepts for application hosting, identity, storage, networking, deployment, and observability.
• Working knowledge of containerized applications and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) concepts, including Terraform or comparable technologies.
• Understanding of application security fundamentals, including authentication, authorization, and secure handling of data, credentials, and secrets.
• Ability to troubleshoot application, pipeline, deployment, and cloud integration issues using logs, metrics, and diagnostic tools.
• Ability to work collaboratively in an Agile engineering environment, contributing to technical discussions, code reviews, and sprint activities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Express, MongoDB/Mongoose, Amazon DocumentDB, Redis/Valkey, or similar caching and background processing technologies.
• Familiarity with modern identity and access technologies, including OIDC, OAuth 2.0, PKCE, JWT, RBAC, Microsoft Entra ID, or MSAL.

Pay

The likely salary range for this position is $127,500 - $172,500. Salary will be set based on experience, geographic location, and contractual requirements.
