About the Role
This position performs a variety of professional, technical, and managerial duties related to volunteer services and recreational programs organized by the Metroparks. This position will work directly with park staff to understand the need for volunteers within the park system and then develop and execute plans for volunteer recruitment, management, and reporting. This position will also work directly with park staff and strategic partners to collaboratively plan, develop, and implement assigned recreation programs, special recreation events, and activities to meet the goals of the Metroparks.Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively as part of the Executive Office team and with other departments.
- Aid in improving community-wide engagement with diverse populations.
- Prioritize multiple projects and manage competing schedules to ensure deadlines are met and projects stay on track.
- Participate as a member of various Metroparks employee committees to help lead strategic and data-supported recreational programming and volunteer initiatives within the organization.
- Create high-quality programming and partnerships to meet organizational goals and break down barriers and hurdles.
- Deliver oral and visual presentations to groups and individuals related to facilities and programs. Represent the Metroparks in a professional manner and communicate organizational goals and values while doing so. Collaborate with various departments on writing and proofing reports, articles, and content for e-newsletters, social media, website/blog content, and board meetings.
- Utilize the Metroparks registration platform, RecTrac, to write, proof, enter, and publish details of recreational and volunteer programs. Use the system to set up registrations, pull reports, and assist the marketing team in annual programming-related entry tasks.
- Identify and report problems to supervisors and contribute to resolving them.
- May supervise volunteers, seasonal, and part-time employees as assigned.
- Collaborate with Metroparks staff across multiple departments to understand volunteer needs for various projects and events and then recruit and fill those needs.
- Works with staff in multiple departments and multiple levels of the organization to coordinate scout and other group volunteer projects taking place in parks.
- Manage volunteer applications and waivers to ensure compliance with Metroparks volunteer requirements.
- Manage incoming public and group volunteer requests and inquiries; pairing them with appropriate park staff and ensuring their inquiry is effectively answered and addressed whenever possible.
- Works with Chief of Marketing and Communications to develop marketing tools and strategies for recognizing and increasing ongoing volunteer recruitment.
- Works with Chief of Marketing and Communications and staff to write regular articles and content for e-newsletters, social media, website/blog content, and board reports.
- Cultivate and manage a database of individual, corporate, university, school, and organization group volunteer contacts for volunteer recruitment.
- Continually update and manage volunteer opportunity listings on volunteer listing websites, forums, etc.
- Responsible for the transparency and maintenance of timely and accurate records, including hours worked, budget, regular volunteer contact groups, partner contact groups, etc.
- Continually work with park staff and volunteers to gather feedback and share opportunities for improvement of the volunteer recruitment and management process.
- Complete accurate and detailed annual reporting of the volunteer activities across the Metroparks.
- Maintain equitable non-monetary methods of recognizing and incentivizing volunteer activities that meet organizational goals, and de minimis financial requirements.
- Take and/or collect photos and videos of volunteer activities throughout the parks and work with the marketing team to add them to the content library.
- Work directly with park staff and strategic partners to collaboratively lead, develop, plan, and implement assigned recreation programs, events, and activities to meet the goals of the Metroparks strategic plan and visitor needs.
- Participate on employee committees as a support member for assigned recreational programs.
- Identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with community organizations to partner in assigned recreation programming.
- Use data and evaluations to guide recreational programming decisions.
- Supervise the Metroparks' "Everyone in the Pool" program for swim lessons and water safety for as long as that program continues to meet organizational goals.
- Manage budgeting and evaluation of assigned recreation programs and events.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation, programming, business, marketing, communications, or similar field. Applicants with 8 or more years of related service will be given credit toward meeting the minimum educational requirements and will be considered for the position.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Five years of experience in event planning, recreational programming, volunteer management, or related field.
- Knowledge and/or experience in swim lessons, aquatics management, and/or lifeguarding preferred.
- Knowledge of recreational programming principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Knowledge and/or skill in a variety of computer software applications including spreadsheets and word processing software; and willingness to learn new software such as RecTrac and others.
- Ability to plan, organize, implement, and report on recreational programs and activities.
- Ability to provide direction to other employees in the area of recreational programming and volunteer management.
- Ability to speak effectively before large and small groups.
- Ability to demonstrate problem-solving skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with the public, outside agencies, other departments, and employees.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
- Must be able to demonstrate creativity and the ability to implement new initiatives.
- May be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs, including special events, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications
- Meets all of the minimum qualifications for Level 08.
- Ten years of experience in a related field.
Skills
