Responsibilities

  • Prepares sterile drug products under the supervision of a registered Pharmacist.
  • Maintains accurate records of products prepared according to established documentation guidelines.
  • Fulfills patient-specific medication orders and prescriptions by pulling items and ensuring medication is ready for delivery.
  • Distributes compounded sterile preparations and non-sterile drug products as specified by the Pharmacist to designated areas on the patient floors.
  • Maintains and stores inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies within the pharmacy or other assigned areas under proper storage conditions and/or security.
  • Handles paperwork for incoming medication orders from wholesalers and supply chain, appropriately scanning and handling paperwork for each order.
  • Rotates stock within storage areas to promote the use of first expiring medications and mitigates potential for patient harm.
  • Discards expired drugs in accordance with established department procedures.
  • Accurately documents pertinent information regarding medications throughout the day including physical counts, expiration dates, and beyond-use dates if applicable.
  • Maintains other operational records not listed as required by department, state, or federal policies or guidelines.
  • Assists customers by answering incoming calls and greeting customers at the Pharmacy window.
  • Retrieves orders for pickup.
  • Prepares non-sterile drug products under the supervision of a registered Pharmacist.
  • Maintains accurate records of products prepared according to established documentation guidelines.
  • Fulfills other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or higher education that requires completion of high school.
  • At least 1 year experience as a Pharmacy Technician required, including 6 months experience in non-sterile compounding and 6 months experience in non-hazardous sterile compounding.
  • Or 6 months experience as a Non-Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician with Connecticut Children’s, with successful completion of training in non-hazardous sterile compounding.
  • Education and/or experience preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare related field.
  • Licenses and certifications required: State of Connecticut Pharmacy Technician license, PTCB within 6 months of start date.
  • Licenses and certifications preferred: Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician Certification (CSPT).
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Understanding of governing policies (USP, , and ) of sterile and non-sterile drug preparation, proficient understanding of environmental monitoring procedures, solid understanding of technician responsibilities in electronic health record (EPIC), demonstrated ability to use mathematical methods and functions for pharmaceutical preparation, working knowledge of Microsoft office suite specifically MS Word and Excel, strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to prioritize work and adapt to new workflows and processes, ability to work as part of a team.
