OTHR$93k–$195k/yrFull-time

About the role

The specialist position in the Fahy lab supports the overarching goal of the lab which is to advance understanding of mechanisms of disease in asthma, COPD and cystic fibrosis. The specialist needs to have the necessary skills to conduct assays and experiments in human biospecimens, cultured airway epithelial cells, and in other model systems of human airway disease. To properly support the lab’s mission and funding-related obligations, the specialist needs to be expert in airway epithelial cell biology, mucus gel pathology and immunology.

Responsibilities

The specific specialist duties include the design and execution of experiments that address the lab’s priorities and obligations as laid out in funded grants and contracts. These experiments are typically done in human airway biospecimens, human blood, or human airway epithelial cells in culture, and the specialist needs to be skilled in current best practice methods for imaging and quantifying proteins and genes under different experimental conditions. A working knowledge of bioengineering principles is also required for the lab’s interest in characterizing the biophysical properties of airway mucus gels. The specialist will have a key role in writing up experimental data for presentation in progress reports, manuscripts, and scientific meetings.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in biological sciences.
  • Experience in analyzing cells proteins and gene expression in human biospecimens including airway secretions, airway mucosal biopsies and peripheral blood immune cells.
  • At least 5 years of experience in experimental methods related to studies of mechanisms of airway diseases. Specifically, the applicant is required to have expertise in methods for culture of airway epithelial cells at air liquid interface, cell and molecular biology methods to quantify gene and protein expression in mammalian cells, and biophysical methods (such as rheology) to quantify the biophysical properties of mucus secreted by airway epithelial cells.
  • Ability to handle and interrogate large databases of biological data.
  • Ability to summarize data and author scientific manuscripts with a track record of at least two first author publication in a lung-related scientific journal.

Qualifications

A reasonable estimate for this position is $93,200 - $194,800.

Application Requirements

  • Curriculum Vitae - CV must clearly list current and/or pending qualifications (e.g. board eligibility/certification, medical licensure, etc.).
