About the role
Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties to manage patient registration and patient financial obligations.
Responsibilities
- Obtains demographic, billing, and insurance information from patient, family, or legal guardian and enters into the registration/billing systems for service and claim processing; scans insurance cards and photo identification.
- Provides patients with information concerning insurance, payment of bills, and hospital procedures.
- May complete managed care responsibilities, including obtaining pre-certification and authorizations.
- Prepares WVU Medicine standard consent forms, notices of privacy practices, and other necessary paperwork related to registration; presents to patient, family, or legal guardian for signatures.
- Obtains electronic signatures for consent to treat and patient financial obligations.
- Collects deposits, co-payments, deductibles, and patient liability payments when applicable; provides patient receipts and documents payment in the registration/billing systems.
- Prepares armbands for patient identification.
- Balances daily receipts and cash drawer for patient payments as needed.
- Follows up on accounts as indicated by system flags (e.g., courtesy dismissal, comments, red stickers).
- May initiate various screenings and obtains all pertinent information for coverage; completes appropriate paperwork.
- Performs medical necessity checks and completes Advanced Beneficiary Notices as needed.
- Schedules, reschedules, or cancels patients in accordance with hospital workflows.
- Checks for order completeness and validates orders against scheduled services.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- State criminal background check and Federal background check (if applicable), as required for regulated areas.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
- Visual acuity must be within normal range.
- Manual dexterity to operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, and other business equipment.
- Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time.
- Reading and comprehension ability.
Working Environment
- High-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Exposure to communicable diseases.
- Frequent interactions with patients, medical staff, and support staff on a continual basis.
Skills
- Ability to accurately utilize applicable computer software and equipment for access processing; demonstrates ability to follow downtime procedures.
- Knowledge of procedures to report and/or document unsafe/hazardous conditions, incidents, and defective equipment in compliance with hospital policy.
- Considerable attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to memorize and reference a considerable amount of information from written sources or appropriate personnel.
- Understanding of medical insurance requirements for payment and basic knowledge of covered services.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
Schedule
Scheduled weekly hours: 40. Shift: Varied.
