About the role

Wilcore Technologies believes that the best products are built when companies understand and value the things they are working on. We value learning and growth and the ability to make a big impact at a small company. We believe that we can make big changes happen and improve the daily lives of millions of people by bringing quality software to the federal space. We are hiring a Front End Engineer to work on a pivotal federal program that is making a positive impact on millions of Americans' daily lives. You'll build and maintain the VA Design System (VADS) component library — the shared components that VA.gov product teams, including our own engineers building forms on the platform, rely on to ship consistent, accessible user experiences. Contract Contingency Notice: This position is contingent upon contract award. Employment offers will be extended only upon successful contract award and client approval. Candidates may be considered and interviewed in advance to support rapid onboarding should the contract be awarded.

Responsibilities

  • Work hand in hand with other engineers building interfaces that match VA.gov designs, using the VA Design System (VADS) component library as foundation.
  • Build and maintain the VADS component library: take new components from design and requirements through implementation, automated tests, Storybook documentation, and release.
  • Maintain and extend existing components: fix bugs reported by teams across VA.gov and add features while keeping backwards compatibility.
  • Consume and create data from backend; help drive direction and format of data endpoints; communicate architecture choices to team members and translate technical decisions for non‑developers.
  • Ensure accessibility: find and fix screen reader and keyboard issues so components meet WCAG 2.2 AA, test manually with VoiceOver (macOS/iOS) and NVDA, add automated axe‑core checks.
  • Review pull requests from teammates in the component library.
  • Rotate through Tier 2 front‑end support: review changes to shared platform code across vets‑website, content‑build, and vets‑json‑schema repos, and help debug front‑end CI issues such as flaky end‑to‑end tests.
  • Own releases and downstream integration: publish new versions of the component library’s npm package, upgrade vets‑website to match, and fix shared platform code when a component change requires it.
  • Develop and maintain the component library’s developer tooling and standards, including its “spec‑driven development” system for AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot and Claude Code) and its GitHub Actions workflows.
  • Keep documentation and backlog current: Storybook stories and usage notes, component requirements documents, decision logs, and backlog issues for bugs, accessibility defects, and discovery work.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience with React and JavaScript, including web components and TypeScript (Stencil.js, JSX, Shadow DOM).
  • Strong CSS/SCSS skills, including USWDS, design tokens, and the VADS css‑library package.
  • Solid understanding of API design and how backend systems work — you'll help shape the direction and format of the data endpoints these components consume.
  • Deep accessibility experience — WCAG 2.2 A/AA,
