About the Role
The Front End Manager oversees all front-end operations including cashiering, customer service, courtesy clerks, service desk functions, cash office coordination, and overall checkout flow. This role ensures an exceptional customer experience by maintaining efficient service, accurate transactions, strong cash controls, and excellent associate performance. The Front End Manager leads, trains, schedules, and develops front-end associates while ensuring compliance with company policies, labor standards, safety rules, and service expectations. This position is critical to store operations, customer satisfaction, and loss prevention efforts.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and daily supervision of cashiers, courtesy clerks, service desk staff, and front-end support roles.
- Ensure fast, friendly, accurate customer service and maintain high service standards at all checkout points.
- Oversee front-end scheduling, labor planning, staffing levels, and task assignments.
- Ensure proper cash handling procedures, register accuracy, safe operations, and compliance with company policies.
- Support the cash office in balancing tills, preparing deposits, resolving variances, and handling financial documentation.
- Manage customer concerns, returns, pricing issues, and service desk transactions professionally and promptly.
- Train and develop front-end associates, including new-hire onboarding, performance coaching, and skills development.
- Implement and maintain front-end merchandising, signage, supplies, and impulse-area product sets.
- Collaborate with Loss Prevention to reduce shrink, ensure proper security measures, and monitor compliance at the front end.
- Maintain store cleanliness and safety by ensuring courtesy clerks perform bagging, cart retrieval, spill cleanup, and carry-out service.
- Analyze front-end KPIs including wait times, transaction accuracy, labor efficiency, and customer satisfaction scores.
- Work closely with Store Leadership to support storewide initiatives, promotions, seasonal programs, and operational changes.
- Ensure compliance with all company policies, state/federal labor laws, and safety regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support front-end and store operations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
- 2–4 years of retail or grocery experience, with previous supervisory experience strongly preferred.
- Strong customer service skills and problem-resolution abilities.
- Knowledge of POS systems, register operations, cash handling processes, and financial controls.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 25 lbs. as needed.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
