Freedom Boat Club - Lead Boating Instructor, Southeast Florida (Fort Lauderdale to Islamorada)

Position Overview

As part of the talented Freedom Boat Club training team, the Lead Instructor ensures all Instructors and members are properly trained and onboarded through virtual classroom and on-the-water training, identifies and monitors training needs in the organization, and provides exceptional service to our members and crew. This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position with some weekend and holiday availability required.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with hiring, training, coaching and continued development of Instructors
  • Ensure all Instructors have proper certifications and up-to-date training
  • Oversee and coordinate with a local Instructor the scheduling of training needs to ensure work is distributed consistently and fairly
  • Complete, with feedback and assistance from team members, performance evaluations
  • Conduct required classroom and on the water curriculum training for new Instructors
  • Explain, demonstrate, and emphasize all safety aspects of jobs and tasks; review any applicable job safety analysis with Instructors
  • Evaluate program effectiveness through periodic job shadowing of member trainings
  • Review existing training programs; suggest enhancements and modifications to improve engagement, learning, and retention or to meet the changing needs of members, the organization, or the industry
  • Maintain knowledge of new methods and techniques for training, and training requirements applicable to the organization and/or industry
  • Identify problems and opportunities such as operational changes or industry developments that training could improve
  • Provide training data and metrics to management team
  • Review incident reports and assess and coordinate additional training needs
  • Provide support and coordination to other departments including but not limited to dock operations, sales and marketing, and community investment
  • Facilitate regular team meetings
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including the role of an Instructor, when necessary:
    • Greet and welcome new members
    • Organize and effectively conduct member classroom and on the water training on various skill, policy, and compliance areas
    • Identify areas in which additional training is required and/or beneficial
    • Record training certifications in Reservation system

Required Qualifications

  • US Coast Guard Captain’s License
  • Pass a background check and drug screen
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Boating experience in or around boats
  • Previous management experience
  • Vision adequate to read / manipulate handheld computer tablets
  • Electronics knowledge & utilization (Smartphone/tablet)
  • Professional communication skills with co-workers, corporate, and members
  • Must be a self-starter and capable of working unsupervised
  • High attention to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous instructor experience is highly desirable
  • Ability to maintain a calm, positive attitude during periods of high activity
  • Maintain a cooperative, team attitude in working with supervisors and fellow employees
  • Highly effective communications skills and friendly customer service

Working Conditions

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Prolonged periods driving to dock locations
  • Prolonged periods standing/walking
  • Safely move from docks to boats and vice versa, unstable & wet surfaces
  • Large drops (~4ft) down to vessels & back up to dock
  • Outside elements workplace (heat, rain, cold, general extreme weather elements)
  • Work in a marina setting on docks that may be fixed or floating
  • Work near and on the water

Pay Range

The anticipated pay range for this position is $50,000 to $80,000, annually. The actual base pay offered will vary depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
