Job Summary

The Fraud and Security Specialist is responsible for protecting the Bank and its customers by investigating fraud, coordinating fraud prevention efforts, supporting physical security systems, and responding to legal and law enforcement requests.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Fraud Detection and Investigation
    • Investigate fraud cases from initial report through final resolution
    • Conduct interviews with employees and customers
    • Gather, organize, and maintain case documentation, timelines, supporting evidence, and investigative files
    • Coordinate with internal departments, financial institutions, vendors, and law enforcement as needed
    • Prepare and document case resolutions
    • Determine investigative priorities, recommend appropriate escalation of fraud matters, and coordinate investigative activities based on the level of financial, operational, and reputational risk to the Bank
  • Fraud Monitoring and Prevention
    • Maintain accurate records of fraud investigations, suspicious activity, losses, recoveries, and restitution payments
    • Generate fraud-related correspondence including resolution letters, Hold Harmless Agreements, and other required documentation
    • Develop fraud trend analysis and prevention reports for management
    • Prepare management reports that analyze fraud trends, emerging threats, operational risks, and recommend corrective actions to reduce future losses
  • Law Enforcement and Legal Coordination
    • Coordinate responses to subpoenas, summonses, legal requests, and law enforcement inquiries
    • Serve as the Bank's liaison with law enforcement during fraud investigations
    • File criminal complaints on behalf of the Bank when appropriate
    • Participate in legal proceedings and court appearances as required
  • Communication and Training
    • Communicate fraud threats, trends, and mitigation strategies to management and Bank employees
    • Develop and deliver fraud training programs for employees
    • Coordinate fraud awareness initiatives with Retail, Operations, and Marketing
    • Aid customers during fraud investigations, including in-person meetings when requested
  • Physical Security Administration
    • Assist with the maintenance, testing, and enhancement of the Bank's physical security systems
    • Maintain alarm systems, contact lists, dispatch information, and system documentation
    • Coordinate scheduled security testing and resolution of system issues
    • Train employees on security system procedures and testing requirements
    • Respond during normal business hours to alarm events, access requests, and other security-related issues
  • Procedures and Continuous Improvement
    • Develop, maintain, and update departmental procedures
    • Maintain fraud and security resources on the Bank's internal and external websites
    • Stay current on fraud trends, technology, and industry best practices
    • Recommend process improvements that enhance operational efficiency, fraud prevention, and physical security
    • Promote teamwork, collaboration, and a positive work environment
    • Serve as the Bank's primary resource on fraud prevention and physical security by researching emerging threats, regulatory expectations, and industry best practices

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Perform job responsibilities in compliance with applicable federal and state banking regulations
  • Cross-train with Compliance team members and provide backup support for Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) functions and other assigned responsibilities
  • Participate in professional development and training related to fraud, security, and regulatory compliance
  • Assist with department projects, strategic initiatives, and operational improvements
  • Participate on internal security committees or peer groups
  • Aid internal audits, external audits, and regulatory examinations
  • Monitor regulatory changes and industry developments affecting fraud prevention and physical security
  • Represent the Bank professionally while supporting community involvement and relationship-building
  • Make recommendations regarding fraud losses, customer reimbursement, account restrictions, operational risk controls, and fraud prevention strategies based upon investigative findings and regulatory requirements

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge:
    • Federal and state banking regulations
    • Banking operations and fraud prevention practices
    • Regulation E
    • Physical security systems and security procedures
    • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Skills:
    • Strong investigative and analytical abilities
    • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
    • Effective problem-solving and decision-making
    • Strong organizational and time management skills
    • Ability to prioritize multiple investigations and projects
    • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with others
    • Ability to build productive relationships with employees, customers, law enforcement, auditors, attorneys, and regulators
  • Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in Business, Criminal Justice, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
    • Minimum of two years of banking experience, preferably within a community bank
    • Experience in fraud investigations, deposit operations, security, or a related operational area preferred
    • Working knowledge of bank operations and Regulation E
    • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or comparable professional certification preferred

Mental and Physical Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to analyze information, investigate complex issues, exercise sound judgment, and solve problems involving multiple variables.
  • The physical requirements include light work involving occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds and routine activities such as sitting, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, typing, speaking, hearing, and using standard office equipment.
  • Close visual acuity is required for reviewing documents, analyzing data, and operating computer systems.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with minimal exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
