About the role

As a Forensic Scientist Trainee with the Bureau of Forensic Services, Harrisburg Regional Laboratory, you will take part in work that supports justice across the Commonwealth. This role gives you the opportunity to learn advanced laboratory techniques while developing confidence in real forensic tasks. Responsibilities

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative testing on trace evidence and drug samples using approved scientific methods.
  • Gain hands-on experience in physical, chemical, and instrumental examination techniques during structured training.
  • Maintain complete and precise records of all testing procedures and results in case files.
  • Follow proper techniques for collecting, preserving, and receiving evidence to support courtroom readiness.
  • Follow all safety, quality assurance, and procedural standards outlined by the Pennsylvania State Police.
  • Provide expert testimony on analytical methods, chain of custody, and examination results when required.

Requirements

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, forensic science, or a closely related physical or natural science, which includes or is supplemented by 16 college credits in chemistry.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Other Requirements:

  • You must meet the PA residency requirement.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Must submit a Report of Medications for screening by the State Police Medical Officer prior to placement.
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

Schedule

  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework is not available for this position.
