Forensic Scientist
What You'll Do
The Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Section within the Chemistry unit of the Richfield or London Laboratory is seeking a Forensic Scientist. This position will report to the lab every day. The successful candidate will:
- Examine and identify controlled substances.
- Identifies unknown chemical compounds.
- Interprets charts from instrumentation.
- Performs wet chemistry, extractions, thin layer and column chromatography.
- Performs various chemical, biological and microscopic examinations.
- Makes conclusions and formulates opinions based on examinations performed.
- Prepares accurate reports for use by law enforcement officials and courts.
- Confers with law enforcement officials regarding examinations performed and conclusions reached.
- Testsifies in court concerning evidence examined and analysis performed.
- Advises other employees and law enforcement agencies on topics of analysis, court testimony, interpretation of results and reports and related topics.
- Aids or directs investigators with evidence collection.
- Prepares reagents and other processing chemicals.
- Any other related duties and projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a directly related science (e.g., chemistry, biology, forensic science, physics, health science, medical technology, etc.). The bachelor's degree and course content must meet the academic requirements of the laboratory's accrediting body.
- Completion of coursework in ALL of the following:
- Organic Chemistry 1 and a lab
- Organic Chemistry 2 and a lab
- Analytical Chemistry and a lab.
- OR Bachelor's degree with 4 years of training and experience directly related to chemistry which includes one year of college level chemistry (ten semester hours, including lab hours, or equivalent), as recognized by the laboratory system director.
Unusual Working Conditions
- Can be exposed to caustic chemicals, explosives, odors, firearms, drugs, decomposing tissue & physiological fluids & contagious diseases.
