Department: HGLCS | Reports to: Principal

About the role

Direct the academic, social, and emotional growth of students so that each student progresses toward the goals and objectives outlined in both the Individual Education Plan and the Service Plan.

Responsibilities

  • Direct student behavior and activities to facilitate goal accomplishment.
  • Create a learning climate conducive to students’ intellectual, social, and emotional development.
  • Maintain records of student progress and ensure every student receives credit for work accomplished.
  • Participate in projecting future educational needs in programming, equipment, and facilities.
  • Work with individual students or groups on special instructional projects.
  • Provide information to assist in developing appropriate learning experiences.
  • Develop instructional materials and assist students in using available resources.
  • Supervise students as they move between instructional areas.
  • Develop an educational plan for each student, ensuring continuity in learning and maximizing learning potential.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Record student daily color on force field.
  • Attend meetings for advised students (CSE, SPR).
  • Provide supervision in hallways or lunchroom when necessary.
  • Provide in-depth academic and sociological reports about students at CSE meetings.
  • Supervise Teacher's Aide assigned to the classroom.
  • Follow weekly meeting schedule, attending team and content meetings.
  • Update cottage notes daily.
  • Maintain valid NYS certification.
  • Support Campus School-wide PBIS program.
  • Maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and First Aid/CPR certification provided by the agency.
  • Attend all mandatory in-service training and regularly attend supervision meetings.
  • Attend other training and in-services as needed to maintain expertise in the field.
  • Perform any additional duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Requirements

  • Provisional or Permanent teaching certification in an academic core area and/or in special education.
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in a core academic area.
  • Initial or professional certification in an academic core area and/or in special education.
  • Experience with "at-risk" emotionally disturbed and/or learning disabled students preferred but not required.
  • Compliance with New York State Department of Education certification regulations under the No Child Left Behind Act.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to work effectively with youth, families, staff, and community contacts from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to deal effectively with hostile youth and/or families.
  • Ability to accept supervision and perform as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change.
  • Ability to interface with people (groups and individuals) and communicate via various mediums (logbooks, email, telephone).
  • Valid driver’s license, adequate auto insurance, and compliance with agency driving policies.
  • Ability to pass annual physical for Category 3 job classification.
  • Compliance with agency safety standards and responsibility for own actions concerning safety and healthy working conditions.
