Footwear Rapid Prototyping Intern
About the Role
As a Footwear Rapid Prototyping Intern in the Inline Engineering team, you will support the operation of our 3D printing department, critical to developing new products across all categories at New Balance. You will plan daily printing schedules, prepare 3D files for printing, operate various 3D print and post-processing machines, and optimize print settings for efficiency and quality. Additionally, you will lead an engineering project, gaining exposure to footwear sole engineering, materials, costing, and manufacturing processes. This role offers valuable experience working with cross-functional teams, including designers, developers, sports researchers, and product managers.
Responsibilities
- 3D Printer Operation: Operate SLS and UV-curable inkjet printing technologies.
- 3D Printer Maintenance: Perform routine cleaning, calibration, and troubleshooting.
- Print Queue Management: Prioritize jobs based on urgency and equipment availability, track progress in real time.
- Model Setup: Prepare 3D data for printing and optimize settings.
- Inventory Management: Track material consumption and recommend ordering schedules.
- Post-Processing: Perform tasks such as immersion bath, waxing, water jetting, sand blasting, and gluing.
- Industry Trends: Stay informed about advancements in rapid prototyping to shape the future of NB’s processes.
- Engineering Project: Work with cross-functional teams to engineer technical products, understand performance/consumer needs, and communicate with overseas partners.
- Development Timelines: Track and ensure milestones are met, including physical testing of components.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, material science, biomechanics, or related field with an emphasis on consumer products and 3D printing knowledge.
- Basic understanding of manufacturing, prototyping, mold making, and materials.
- Excellent communication, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in PC tools (spreadsheets, databases, word processing) and exposure to CAD software (Rhino, Materialise Magics, Solidworks).
- Curiosity, open-mindedness, and a willingness to take on challenges.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, material science, biomechanics, or related field with an emphasis on consumer products and 3D printing knowledge.

Pay
$32.00 hourly (actual base pay varies based on relevant experience, time in role, internal equity, geographic location, and more).

Schedule
On-site 5 days a week in Lawrence, MA, with a hybrid model requiring in-office presence Tuesday through Thursday. Includes “Work from Anywhere” (WFA) for four weeks per calendar year.
One-year temporary assignment in Lawrence, MA.
