Food Service Technician I
This is a wage position (up to 28 hours/week) with no benefits, located at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Danville, VA. Hiring range: $15.00/hour.
About the role
The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) supports individuals by promoting recovery, self-determination, and wellness. This position is within Dietary Services at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72-bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility.
Responsibilities
- Read tray tickets and posted job assignments
- Properly assemble patient trays and snacks
- Serve items from cold serving stations and/or hot serving lines
- Clean and wash dishes, trays, equipment, and kitchen facilities
- Maintain high levels of personal hygiene in accordance with Virginia Department of Health rules and regulations
- Work in a hot, humid, and secure environment with individuals experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or forensic/legal involvement
- Perform tasks requiring prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, and carrying objects (10-40 lbs.)
Requirements
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions
- Current ServSafe certification or ability to obtain certification within six months of employment
- Basic knowledge of food service and sanitation
- Ability to read and write
- Ability to lift 20-50 pounds
- Visual acuity to detect food spoilage
- Ability to work varied shifts, weekends, and holidays (operating hours: 5:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.)
Additional Considerations
- Previous behavioral health or hospital experience
- High school diploma
- Veterans and individuals with National Service experience
A successful fingerprint-based criminal history check, drug screen, and reference checks are required. Under Virginia Code 37.2-314 and 37.2-408.1, individuals convicted of specific "barrier" crimes may be ineligible. Employees may be required to disclose immunization status for infection prevention or outbreak management.
