About the role

Permanent, part‑time (7/10 time) Food Service Technician I position at DSH‑Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, Los Angeles County. The hospital operates approximately 826 beds and treats patients under commitment categories including LPS Act, Incompetent to Stand Trial, Offenders with Mental Health Disorders, and Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity. Candidates will be assigned to AM or PM shifts based on hospital needs and must be willing to work in any unit/program and any shift.

Responsibilities

• Serve and assist with preparation, pre‑dish, and assembly of food and beverages in dining rooms, central kitchen trayline, and/or dish room.
• Clean and sanitize all food service equipment, dining tables, and chairs.
• Label and date food items using the First In, First Out (FIFO) method.
• Verify correct food items according to menu/meal tickets, including correct diets and modified diet/liquid textures.
• Ensure all food is portioned correctly.
• Maintain cold food items below 41°F and hot food above 165°F.
• Assist with loading and unloading meal delivery food carts and transit carts on refrigerated trucks between the central kitchen and dining rooms.
• Receive weekly food and non‑food supplies from the central kitchen and store them in dining room pantries.
• Follow HACCP procedures, the Nutrition Services Policy & Procedures Manual, hospital Administrative Directives, and all other applicable policies.

Requirements

Applicants must have eligibility through one of the following: permanent civil service status, reachability on an employment list, transfer eligibility, or reinstatement eligibility. If you do not have eligibility, you must take the examination (separate from the vacancy application). Examination link: Food Service Technician I Exam. Pay

Monthly salary range: $3,329.00 – $4,163.00. New‑to‑state candidates will be hired at the minimum of the classification or alternate range.

Schedule

Part‑time (7/10 time). Shifts: AM or PM as needed; must be willing to work any unit/program and any shift to meet facility needs. Telework: not available (in‑office only).

Location

DSH‑Metropolitan State Hospital, Norwalk, Los Angeles County (15 miles east of Los Angeles). The hospital has an open campus within a security perimeter. Nearby attractions include Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and the beaches of Huntington, Newport, and Laguna.
