About the role

The Food Service Specialist Substitute (FSS sub) is essential in maintaining campus food service operations. The person(s) in this role are asked to provide coverage for when Food Service Specialists (FSS) are absent, or fail to show up for their scheduled shift.

Responsibilities

  • Provide coverage for FSS when absent or missed.
  • Cut/chop fruits & vegetables, follow recipes, adhere to kitchen processes.
  • Monitor students during meal periods, encourage consumption of fresh fruits & vegetables, enforce no sharing of food rules.
  • Perform kitchen cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, wiping tables, washing dishes, disposing of trash.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Preferred experience in food service, restaurant, or hospitality.
  • Local Food Safety Permit.
  • Basic understanding of food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Working knowledge of kitchen production procedures.
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment, tools, and utensils.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Works well under pressure in a team setting.
  • Ability to lift, bend, pull, push, twist.
  • Works well around children and provides customer service.

What You’ll Do

  • Ensure zero follow-up findings for campus internal counting and claiming audits by the last day of school.
  • Encourage students to participate in the meal program, especially when seen not eating.
  • Accurately count and serve student meals, ensuring reimbursable meals are offered and taken.
  • Report any counting and claiming issues observed to managers.
  • Participate in weekly employee huddles, actively listening to topics presented by managers.
  • Show up for scheduled shifts and call managers for substitutes when absent.
  • Avoid conflicts among team members and report any potential issues to managers.
  • Ensure meals are ready according to schedules, follow recipes, and report errors to managers.
  • Clean tables and sweep the dining area between meal periods.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and sanitization as per state guidelines.
  • Function as cashier at the point of sale, identifying state reimbursable meals and handling cash/check transactions.
  • Rotate milk products to ensure quality and freshness.
  • Report any pests/rodents issues immediately to managers.
  • Follow all established processes and procedures, discussing situations where they seem unfulfillable with managers.
