Food Service Assistant - Multiple Positions Available

Three positions available: 2 at Crater High School and 1 at Scenic Middle School.

About the role

The Food Services Assistant helps provide for student nutritional needs by assisting in the preparation, service, and sales of cafeteria meals. This role performs recurring tasks under direct supervision, following established procedures and Federal, State, and District regulations with a focus on food safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and serves cafeteria meals, including hot and cold entrees, fruits, vegetables, snacks, and other foods, ensuring proper quality and quantity.
• Readies food facilities for service, including preparing serving areas and setting out food, beverages, and other mealtime items.
• Performs basic food preparation tasks, such as washing and chopping fruits and vegetables, checking food temperatures, and placing dishes in the oven.
• Follows written menus, recipes, production records, and production standards.
• Assists the Cook Manager with record-keeping and maintenance of Nutrition Services documents, including production records, temperature logs, and inventory.
• Assembles food items for the salad bar.
• Clears, stores, and appropriately disposes of leftover food to meet sanitary standards and minimize waste.
• Operates kitchen equipment, including point-of-sale cash registers/software, oven, food warmer, dishwasher, and steam table.
• Ensures serving lines are properly stocked and adequately supplied.
• Follows food safety and sanitation procedures in receiving, storing, preparing, and serving food, as well as cleaning and maintaining equipment.
• Maintains food service areas in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition.
• Handles point-of-sale transactions for cafeteria food purchases.
• Washes and stores equipment, pots, pans, trays, and other food service items; lifts moderately heavy objects.
• Assists in maintaining inventory and rotating stocked supplies.
• Supports other food services personnel in completing assigned tasks.
• Assists with training new employees, parent volunteers, and student helpers.
• Participates in required hours of annual continuing education, per federal law.
• Maintains effective and respectful working relationships with staff and students.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must pass a criminal background check.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow multi-step written and verbal instructions in English.
• Valid Oregon Food Handler’s Card.

Working Conditions

The Food Services Assistant works primarily in an industrial school kitchen and cafeteria. The environment is often loud and includes exposure to:

• Hot and cold temperatures, hot surfaces, and vibrating equipment.
• Chemicals, fumes, communicable diseases, sharp objects, hand-operated power equipment, odors, and slippery surfaces.

Physical demands include:

• Constant standing or walking (up to 100% of the time) on tile/concrete surfaces, covering up to 2–3 miles per day.
• Moderate to fast-paced walking to meet daily timelines.
• Lifting/Carrying: Constantly lift up to 10 lbs.; frequently lift up to 20 lbs.; occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.; and carry loads up to 15 feet.
• Pushing/Pulling: Constantly exert a force up to 10 lbs.; frequently up to 20 lbs.; occasionally up to 50 lbs.; and intermittently up to 75 lbs.
• Climbing: Infrequent use of step stools to retrieve or replace items in stock rooms, freezers, or storage areas.
• Bending/Twisting: Constant bending or twisting at the waist/knees while preparing food, retrieving supplies, or cleaning.
• Kneeling/Crouching: Occasional kneeling or crouching to access lower shelves or clean below counter level.
• Using Hands/Arms: Constant use of both hands and arms for handling, gripping, and grasping during food preparation and cleaning.
• Reaching: Frequent or constant extending and reaching, including occasional overhead reaching.
• Sensory Requirements: Sight for inspecting cleanliness and food quality; hearing for equipment signals and safety alarms; smell for food preparation; and speaking for communication.

Pay

$16.26 – $19.55 per hour, depending on approved experience.

• Longevity pay after 6 years of employment.
• Annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) pay increase (as negotiated with Oregon School Employees Association).
• Annual step pay increase for eligible employees.

Schedule

• 5.75 hours per day.
• 186 days per year (August – June).
• Approximately 180 workdays per year.
