Food Service Assistant
Job Summary
The Food Service Assistant (FSA) assists the Food & Nutrition Services Supervisor (FNSS) to ensure breakfast, lunch, and snack services rendered at St. Joseph Academy (SJA) are consistent with accepted national food handling standards, SJA mission and values, the policies and procedures of the institution, and the standards of all regulating and licensing agencies. The FSA performs a variety of food preparation services in the delivery of the SJA children's breakfast, lunch and snack delivery. The FSA performs a variety of sanitary services during all breakfast and lunch services. The FSA is responsible for equipment operations, sanitization; facility cleaning, and trouble shooting in production area to alert management of equipment malfunctions and/or failures. The FSA will fill in for vacation and absences of other Food Service staff.
Qualifications
- High school degree or GED preferred
- Experience in food service/kitchen preferred
- Safe Serve Certification required within 6 months
- Bilingual in Spanish a plus
- Demonstrated ability to analyze an issue, identify options, and implement solutions
- Interest in working with a child population
- Ability to work cooperatively with people in and outside of Food & Nutrition Services department
- Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing); effectively interact with children, families, and staff members
- Possesses good hand-eye coordination
- Reads, writes and follows directions and instructions
- Detail oriented; ability to multi-task, set priorities, work under pressure, and meet deadlines
Essential Job Functions/Duties
- Extends excellent service to all children
- Affirms each child's right to privacy and confidentiality, at all times
- Models behaviors that foster the "child-centered" philosophy to other staff
- Uses a variety of communication methods to proactively identify, anticipate, prevent, or address issues and inter-department concerns, problems, or conflicts
- Maintains safety and sanitation standards in work areas
- Cleaning and sanitizing area after each assignment according to established department guidelines
- Operates and secures all equipment and supplies in a safe manner, according to department standards to safeguard children, and co-worker's health and well-being
- Set-up of cafeteria for Academy lunch services (includes washing tables, mopping floors, pulling up tables), as needed
- Trash removal in kitchen
- Manage kitchen stock as delivered, including dating, rotating, organizing stock room and cleaning
- Labels, dates and restocks all food items and supplies legibly enough to prevent errors prior to, during, and after each meal service; ensuring proper wrapping and storage according to department quality control standards
