Position Purpose

Performs work to prepare, cook and serve meals, salads and a la‑carte items; prepares entrees, vegetables, and other side dishes according to standardized recipes and keeps accurate documentation of food preparation. Responsible for collecting monies, accurate meal counts, and recording fees received for the purchase of meals and other food.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare, cook and serve meals, salads, and a la‑carte items; prepare entrees, vegetables, and other side dishes according to standardized recipes and maintain accurate documentation of food preparation.
  • Serve as a cashier in the school cafeteria, collecting money and accurately recording all food leaving the serving line using a computerized point‑of‑sale system.
  • Follow accurate procedures for the exchange and collection of monies and assist in the preparation of deposits.
  • Participate in on‑the‑job training to understand requirements of federally reimbursable meals, identification of meals on the serving line, and food preparation.
  • Read, interpret, and follow standardized recipes for food preparation in a school cafeteria.
  • Ensure the kitchen area, equipment, and utensils are kept clean according to sanitation codes; follow a schedule for maintaining cleanliness.
  • Perform various housekeeping duties, including sweeping and mopping floors, wiping or washing tables and chairs, cleaning the bathroom, and cleaning the serving, receiving, and dining areas.
  • Comply with policies and procedures in the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) Child Nutrition Handbook.
  • Provide effective communication and customer service to students, parents, and school system staff, as appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Apps.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member, completing tasks in the absence of clear direction.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations required for records and reports.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and administer detailed instructions and recipes in large quantities.
  • Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, students, parents, and the community.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

Certification Requirements

Must be ServSafe Certified or able to become ServSafe Certified within 90 days and maintain certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in food service and/or serving as a cashier.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position operates in an office and school cafeteria environment. It routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, copiers, and cafeteria/food preparation equipment. The role may involve direct contact with school staff, students, parents, and the community. Work is considered heavy physical work, requiring the exertion of a minimum of 40 pounds of force.

Schedule

Monday‑Friday (varies based on school assignment). Position not eligible for hybrid telework.

Pay

Noncertified Grade 17 (nonexempt).
