Floating Cashier Assistant - Apex area
Noncertified Grade 17, nonexempt, non-contract position. Schedule: Monday–Friday (varies based on school assignment). Not eligible for hybrid telework.
About the role
Performs work to prepare, cook, and serve meals, salads, and à-la-carte items; prepares entrees, vegetables, and other side dishes according to standardized recipes and keeps accurate documentation of food preparation. Responsible for collecting monies, accurate meal counts, and recording fees received for the purchase of meals and other food.
Responsibilities
- Prepares, cooks, and serves meals, salads, and à-la-carte items following standardized recipes and maintains accurate food-preparation documentation.
- Serves as a cashier in the school cafeteria; records sales using a computerized point-of-sale system and maintains accurate records of all food served.
- Follows procedures for exchanging and collecting monies and assists in preparing deposits.
- Participates in on-the-job training on federally reimbursable meals, meal identification on the serving line, and food preparation.
- Reads, interprets, and follows standardized recipes for large-quantity food preparation in a school cafeteria.
- Ensures the kitchen area, equipment, and utensils are kept clean according to sanitation codes; follows a schedule for maintaining cleanliness.
- Performs housekeeping duties such as sweeping and mopping floors, wiping or washing tables and chairs, cleaning bathrooms, and cleaning serving, receiving, and dining areas.
- Complies with policies and procedures in the Wake County Public School System Child Nutrition Handbook.
- Provides effective communication and customer service to students, parents, and school-system staff.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be ServSafe Certified or able to become ServSafe Certified within 90 days and maintain certification.
Skills
- Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Apps.
- Excellent customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in food service and/or serving as a cashier.
Work Environment
This position operates in an office and school cafeteria environment. Routinely uses standard office equipment (computers, scanners, copiers) and cafeteria/food-preparation equipment. Must be able to interact directly with school-system staff, students, parents, and the community. Work is considered heavy physical work, requiring the exertion of a minimum of 40 pounds of force.
