About the role

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for performing highly skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of specialized and heavy-duty equipment. Typical functions include performing major and minor preventative maintenance service on state vehicles and equipment, diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic problems, operating diagnostic tools and computer software, welding and fabricating, maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe work environment, inspecting and testing equipment for safety and proper working order, completing paperwork and assisting in writing specifications, maintaining workplace inventory, ordering parts and supplies to maintain an inventory of parts, adequately explaining technical diagnoses and needed repairs to non-mechanical personnel, performing transportation planning functions, determining existing and future service levels, accruing needs and relating to projected revenues, coordinating meetings with other units to evaluate fleet and equipment needs, performing necessary research investigation, analysis, and reporting for the equipment fleet, making recommendations for purchase, replacement, or reassignment of equipment within a division, writing preliminary specifications for equipment, managing and/or developing budgets for an assigned unit including operating requirements, equipment purchases, parts and supply purchases, and ensuring that actual expenses are consistent with the approved budget.

Responsibilities

  • Perform major and minor preventative maintenance service on state vehicles and equipment
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic problems
  • Operate diagnostic tools and computer software
  • Weld and fabricate
  • Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work environment
  • Inspect and test equipment for safety and proper working order
  • Complete paperwork and assist in writing specifications
  • Maintain workplace inventory
  • Order parts and supplies to maintain an inventory of parts
  • Adequately explain technical diagnoses and needed repairs to non-mechanical personnel
  • Perform transportation planning functions
  • Determine existing and future service levels, accruing needs and relating to projected revenues
  • Coordinate meetings with other units to evaluate fleet and equipment needs

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in automobile, truck, light or heavy-duty road equipment, combustion engines or chassis maintenance and repair
  • Three years of experience in automobile, truck, light or heavy-duty road equipment, combustion engines or chassis maintenance and repair

Qualifications

  • Education and experience requirements at this level consist of two years of experience in automobile, truck, light or heavy-duty road equipment, combustion engines or chassis maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of education/training as an Automotive/Diesel Mechanic.

Skills

  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment and terminology of the mechanical trade
  • Knowledge of diagnosing problems with light and heavy-duty equipment
  • Knowledge of the functioning of internal combustion engines
  • Knowledge of parts-ordering procedures within the assigned shop
  • Knowledge of repair costs and costs of new equipment
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools
  • Ability to read and understand parts manuals, service manuals, and schematics
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to perform advanced and technical repairs, including the use of welding equipment
  • Ability to direct the work of other mechanics and helpers
  • Ability to use highly technical diagnostic tools such as lab scopes, scanners and computer software

Benefits

The State offers several different medical, dental, and vision plans to better fit your needs, including options to enroll in a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).

Annual benefit allowance covers up to $20,538.24 for employees and their dependents to enroll in benefits.

Retirement savings plans include a Pathfinder Defined Contribution Plan with an employer match of 6% with an employee contribution of 4.5%, and an OPERS Defined Benefit Plan for returning employees previously enrolled in OPERS.

Employees accrue 15 days of annual leave during the first 1-5 years of service, 18 days for 5-10 years, 20 days for 10-20 years, and 25 days for over 20 years of service. Sick leave accrues at 15 days per year, and there are 11 paid holidays per year.

Longevity payments are paid annually to eligible State employees with a minimum of 2 years of State service.

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a cooperative effort between employees and administration to help employees gain access to professional services in resolving personal problems.

Some positions may also require applicants to participate in a Physical Abilities Demonstration and be rated as capable of performing the essential functions of this job family.

Persons appointed to positions at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority must possess or obtain a commercial driver’s license, class A, no later than five months from the date of appointment.

Applicants for positions with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation must take and pass a drug test prior to appointment.

Applicants for positions with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority must take and pass a physical and drug test prior to appointment.

Positions with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation require possession of a Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) refrigerant certification from a program approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) within 12 months of initial appointment.

Positions with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation may require a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) certification within 12 months of initial appointment.

Upon a conditional offer of employment, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services applicants must submit to a physical examination and shall meet the physical examination requirements of occasionally lifting/carrying 50 pounds and able to push and pull a maximum force of 50 pounds.

Positions within OMES – Fleet Management at levels II – V may require an Alternative Fuels certification(s) within 12 months of initial appointment.

Some agencies may have determined positions in this job family to be safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. 427.8.
