Job Summary
The Fleet Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work on county vehicles and equipment, ensuring they operate safely and efficiently. This role involves diagnosing issues, performing maintenance, completing repairs, and supporting operational readiness.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on county vehicles and equipment, including light-, medium-, and heavy-duty units.
- Ensure all repairs and maintenance comply with county policies, manufacturer specifications, and safety regulations.
- Respond to field service calls and perform roadside repairs to minimize downtime.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area; handle tools, equipment, and hazardous materials safely.
- Keep accurate records of repairs, parts used, labor hours, and completed services in the fleet management system.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to field service requests as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues and conduct preventive maintenance.
- Complete repairs efficiently and with high workmanship.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
- Operate specialized equipment and maintain a clean, safe work area.
- Communicate with supervisors, operators, and vendors about repair needs and equipment status.
- Maintain detailed service records in a fleet management database.
- Work safely in a shop environment and adhere to safety protocols.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent with seven (7) years of relevant experience.
- Automotive trade school certificate or equivalent in experience.
- A valid Texas State Commercial Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards relevant to fleet operations (DOT, OSHA, state inspection requirements).
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and complete work with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
Preferences
- Completion of a formal automotive or diesel technology training program from an accredited trade school, technical college, or community college.
- Additional coursework or certifications in automotive technology, diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or related fields.

- Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor environments, including maintenance shops, vehicle yards, and field locations.
- Physical Requirements: Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crawling, working in awkward or confined positions; lifting up to 50 pounds with occasional assistance or mechanical aids; climbing ladders, entering and exiting vehicles, and working underneath vehicles on lifts or creepers.
- Other Requirements: Drug screen and meeting other standards may be required.
