About the role

The City of Huntsville’s Public Transit department is seeking qualified applicants for Fixed Route Bus Operator positions. This is skilled work in the operation of medium and heavy-duty transit buses on fixed routes. Work involves responsibility for driving a medium and heavy-duty shuttle bus on a fixed route, and transporting passengers in a safe, courteous and professional manner. Work also involves responsibility for conducting daily vehicle inspections, collecting fares from customers and providing information, and performing basic record-keeping duties.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a medium and heavy-duty shuttle bus on a fixed route, transporting passengers safely and courteously.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections to ensure the bus is in good working order.
  • Collect fares from customers and provide information as needed.
  • Perform basic record-keeping duties, such as logging trip times and fare collections.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.
  • Significant experience in driving medium and heavy-duty transit and/or school buses, serving the public on fixed routes.
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A or B (minimum), with Air Brakes and Passenger Endorsements.

Skills

  • Knowledge of basic maintenance and repair of medium duty buses.
  • Experience in the operation and care of a notebook computer.
